Your dream of controlling a massive mecha robot, similar to those in renowned anime series like Gundam, or engaging in combat in computer games like Titanfall or Armored Core is about to come true if you’ve ever entertained such thoughts. Introducing ARCHAX, a 4.5-meter-tall mecha robot made by Tsubame Industry in Japan. This magnificent machine is yours to possess, but its price is commensurate with its enormous size: an astounding 400 million yen ($2.75 million).

With the release of ARCHAX, a piloted robot greatly influenced by Japanese mecha culture, Tsubame Industry, a modest Japanese startup, has captured the interest of mecha aficionados. Elevating to a remarkable height of 4.5 meters and weighing roughly 3.5 tons, ARCHAX runs on a 300 volt battery and boasts the remarkable capability to switch between a stationary and drivable mode, with a maximum speed of 10 kilometers per hour. But if you want to become a mecha pilot, you’ll have to be willing to give up a sizable amount of money.

The name “ARCHAX” is derived from the name of the extinct flying dinosaur, Archeopteryx. Tsubame Industry has posted a number of interesting films showcasing the robot. Additionally, the startup disclosed that a functioning prototype of ARCHAX will be unveiled in November during the Japan Mobility Show 2023, formerly known as the Tokyo Motor Show. Regarding the planned market launch, Tsubame estimates that it will take place in about a year, with a concentration on affluent foreign billionaires as possible customers.

The outer shell of ARCHAX is primarily made of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), while its core structure is composed of an alloy of aluminum and iron. Even though there seems to be a large camera on the head, it is only ornamental. In actuality, the pilot controls ARCHAX by sending visual data to many monitors inside the cockpit from 26 carefully placed cameras spread throughout the mecha. The control panel, which has a touchscreen interface, multiple pedals, and two joysticks, looks like it belongs on a construction site. Interestingly, ARCHAX may also be controlled from a distance.

The top speed that ARCHAX can reach in upright mode is two kilometers per hour; in drive mode, this speed can be increased to ten kilometers per hour. While it may not bring the same thrill as taking to the skies as in video games, it provides mobility that goes beyond simply being motionless. The robot, which has safety features to stop accidents in the event of excessive tilting, may tilt forward up to 20 degrees when in a stationary position and up to 30 degrees when in drive mode. These safety measures comply with robotics and construction machinery safety requirements and risk assessment procedures.

ARCHAX’s robotic limbs are equipped with five movable fingers that can grasp a variety of things. It’s important to remember that the weight restriction for these grabs is 15 kg, putting safety before strength. Lifting a large object might cause the mecha to topple, endangering both the pilot’s safety and the machine’s structural integrity.

Even while ARCHAX is not the first working mecha to come out of Japan, it is unquestionably one of the most sophisticated and eye-catching. A more affordable option for anyone unable to afford the substantial $2.75 million price tag would be a mecha suit that is both lightweight and fully functioning.
