Pope Francis has expressed his strong condemnation of the Quran burning incident that took place in Sweden last week, stating that he felt “angry and disgusted” upon witnessing the desecration of the Muslim holy book.

In an interview published in the United Arab Emirates newspaper Al Ittihad on Monday, the pope emphasized the importance of respecting any book considered holy in order to show respect for those who believe in it.

The incident occurred in Stockholm on Wednesday, coinciding with the celebration of Eid al-Adha for many Muslims. A man tore up and burned a Quran outside a mosque, which drew widespread condemnation from various quarters, including the governments of Turkey and Saudi Arabia. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), representing 57 member states, also called for collective measures and the use of international law to counter religious hatred.

In a statement, the OIC stressed the need to remind the international community of the urgent application of international law, which explicitly prohibits the advocacy of religious hatred.

Saudi Arabia, in response to the incident, summoned Sweden’s ambassador and urged Stockholm to cease actions that contradict international efforts aimed at promoting values of tolerance, moderation, and the rejection of extremism. The Swedish government, along with Washington, also condemned the incident, which triggered large-scale protests in Baghdad.

The Swedish police had granted permission for a protest, but the individual who burned the Quran was charged with agitation against an ethnic or national group. The incident has sparked discussions about Sweden’s identity, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson highlighting the serious security situation and calling for respect and the avoidance of insulting others.

While Swedish police have rejected several recent applications for anti-Quran demonstrations, courts have overruled those decisions, citing a violation of freedom of speech. However, Pope Francis rejected the notion of freedom of speech being used as a means to denigrate others, stating that such behavior should be rejected and condemned.

This Quran burning incident is not the first anti-Muslim protest in Sweden. In January, Turkey suspended talks on Sweden’s NATO membership application after a Danish far-right politician burned a copy of the Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

The condemnation from Pope Francis adds to the global outrage and calls for mutual respect and tolerance among different religious communities. The incident highlights the need for greater understanding, dialogue, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence in an increasingly interconnected world.

  1. The presence of a large Muslim migrant population in Sweden has destroyed this once safe and secure nation. I fully support the actions of all Swedes to do whatever it takes to deport people who have no interest in being Swedish and that would be every Muslim.

  2. Is a book, people !!! So is the Bible or the Torah. Sweden did not burned the book, it was a moron, similar to the many right wing morons we have in our own country.

Having said that, it was totally unnecessary to stir up the negative passions of people that take their religions very seriously. Amazing we are in the XXI century and science has dispelled a lot of the histories in those books as pure fiction and nevertheless people still hold on to those beliefs in spite of ALL the evidences.

I guess that is also why we still have Trump Supporters

  3. Christian’s have a responsibility. We do not agree with the teachings of the Quran, however, our responsibility is to share the salvation by grace that Christ offers. Burning or attempting to destroy the Quran or any book considered holy only places a barrier between Christians and those who are without Christ’s love!

  4. Well….the fix is simple -even a 3rd grader knows this….get all your raping / murdering Mus-slime people out of Sweden and there will be no more problems.
