Texas has been ordered by a federal judge to relocate a sizable floating barrier from the Rio Grande’s waters to the banks. The contentious strategy used by Republican Governor Greg Abbott to discourage migrants from entering the country across the southern border has prompted protests from both the Mexican and American governments, leading to this decision.

The ruling of the judge:

The order was given by U.S. District Judge David Ezra, and it is regarded as a win for the administration of President Joe Biden. The action follows Texas’ July deployment of wrecking ball-like buoys on the river as part of Operation Lone Star, a comprehensive border security effort. The judge has given Texas until September 15th to move the barrier.

Judge Ezra raised concerns in his decision over the possible breach of a treaty between the United States and Mexico and questioned the barrier’s ability to stop illegal immigration across the Rio Grande River. The judge stressed that Texas had not provided solid proof that the buoys had greatly decreased these crossings.

Abbott’s Reaction

Declaring that the ruling was a continuation of President Biden’s failure to recognize the state’s attempts to address border security concerns, Governor Abbott declared that Texas would file an appeal.

A statement from Abbott read, “Today’s court decision merely prolongs President Biden’s willful refusal to acknowledge that Texas is rightfully stepping up to do the job that he should have been doing all along.”

The Barrier of Rio Grande:

The barrier in question is longer than a soccer field and made up of numerous bright orange buoys. It is located in a busy area where migrants regularly try to enter Texas from Mexico. Along with the buoys, Texas has erected steel fence and razor wire along the border and given armed officers permission to hold migrants on suspicion of trespassing.

The U.S. Justice Department filed lawsuits after the buoys were installed, claiming that Texas had illegally built a barrier on the international boundary. The Biden administration has voiced worries about the barrier’s effects on the environment and on humanitarian issues.

Measures for Border Security and Their Effects:

Operation Lone Star, a collection of border security programs, has carried over some of the tactics from President Donald Trump’s previous administration. In 2020, Mark Morgan, the acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, disclosed that preparations for a comparable water wall were started under the Trump administration but shelved when Joe Biden took president.

Abbott’s border mission is to mitigate the spike in migrant crossings; interactions with the Border Patrol have grown in several sectors this fiscal year. However, the Biden administration claims that since new immigration regulations went into force in May—the same month that pandemic-related asylum restrictions ended—illegal border crossings have decreased.
