A senseless act of violence marred the Beyond Wonderland electronic music festival held near the Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Washington, over the weekend.
Authorities have identified 26-year-old Spc. James M. Kelly, an active-duty member of the U.S. Army stationed at Joint Base Lewis McChord, as the suspected gunman responsible for the shooting. The incident left two people dead and three others injured.
As investigators work to uncover the motive behind this tragic event, the community and festival organizers grapple with the aftermath of the senseless violence.
The Shooting and Capture: On Saturday evening, at approximately 8:25 p.m., chaos ensued when gunshots rang out at a campground near the music festival.
Bravery and quick thinking from an undercover police detective, Det. Edgar Salazar of the Moses Lake Police Department, who previously served in the U.S. Marines, led to Kelly’s capture. Salazar confronted the suspect in an adjacent agricultural field, ultimately shooting and injuring Kelly. Other law enforcement officers swiftly took him into custody and provided medical attention.
The Victims: The shooting claimed the lives of Brandy Escamilla, 29, and her fiancée, Josilyn Ruiz, 26, both from Seattle. Their presence at the festival was tragically cut short by the random act of violence. In addition to the fatalities, three individuals sustained injuries.
Andrew “August Morningstar” Caudra, 31, from Eugene, Oregon, Lily A. Luksich, 20, from Millcreek, Washington, and 61-year-old Lori Williams, a security guard working at the music festival, were wounded in the incident.
Investigation and Motive: Law enforcement agencies, including the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the North Central Washington Special Investigations Unit, are diligently working to determine the motive behind the shooting rampage.
The investigation aims to shed light on the factors that led to this devastating event and bring closure to the affected families and community.
Community Impact and Festival Cancellation: The shooting had an immediate impact on the Beyond Wonderland electronic music festival. Promoters made the difficult decision to cancel the event’s second day in response to the tragedy.
The cancellation aimed to prioritize the safety and well-being of festival attendees and allow space for healing amidst the distress caused by the incident.
The Suspect and Legal Proceedings: Spc. James M. Kelly, a 26-year-old soldier, joined the U.S. Army in 2021 and serves as a fire support specialist assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Following his arrest, Kelly received medical treatment for his injuries and was subsequently booked at the Grant County Jail on suspicion of murder. It remains unclear whether he has obtained legal representation at this time.
