Woman Dies Trying to Save Teen from Falling Down Waterfall

A woman died after trying to stop a teenager from falling off a ledge on a California hiking trail, a sheriff’s department said.

The woman was hiking, supervising four teens, at Three Sisters Falls in the Cleveland National Forest on Thursday, June 8, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

One of the teens slipped while “hiking along the ledge of one of the falls,” deputies said.

Though the woman tried to prevent the girl from falling over the ledge, they both fell, the sheriff’s department said.

Several witnesses tried to help the woman and teen, deputies said.

The woman died on scene, while the teen was taken to a hospital with “severe but non-life-threatening injuries,” deputies said.

The sheriff’s department said the woman’s name is being withheld until her family is notified of her death.

Three Sisters Falls Trail, which is about 54 miles northeast of San Diego, is a full-day, 5.5-mile-long hike with an elevation of 1,000 feet, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
