Pope Francis, the 86-year-old head of the Catholic Church, is recovering well following abdominal surgery at a Rome hospital. The procedure, which took place on Wednesday, has renewed health concerns for the pontiff.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that the pope had a peaceful night and is in good general condition. The surgery was performed to repair a hernia that caused recurring pain and symptoms. As the pope continues to recuperate, prayers and well wishes from around the world pour in.

Successful Surgery and Postoperative Recovery

According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, Pope Francis had a restful night, managing to sleep for an extended period. He remains alert, in good general condition, and is breathing easily. The pope expressed gratitude for the messages of support and requested continued prayers. As advised by his medical staff, he will spend the day resting in the hospital.

The surgery, called a laparotomy, was performed by Dr. Sergio Alfieri and involved general anesthesia. While not an urgent procedure, it became necessary as the pope continued to experience pain.

The operation aimed to repair a hernia related to the surgery he underwent in 2021, which involved the removal of half of his colon. Medical sources stated that no additional pathologies or illnesses were found during the surgery.

History of Health Concerns

Pope Francis has faced several health challenges in recent years. In late May, he canceled work commitments due to a fever, and he was previously hospitalized in March for bronchitis. However, he recovered after receiving antibiotics.

The pope has also undergone other medical procedures, including the removal of part of his lung due to pneumonia during his youth. In 2019, he had ocular surgery for a cataract, and chronic sciatica pain and knee troubles have caused mobility issues.

Implications and Potential Constitutional Crisis

The pope’s fragile health raises concerns over the Vatican’s management should he be incapacitated for an extended period. Unlike other hierarchical structures, the Catholic system does not have a designated “vice pope” who can exercise authority in the pope’s absence.

While the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, oversees day-to-day management, he lacks the authority to make significant decisions such as appointing bishops or creating and suppressing dioceses worldwide.

Positive Outlook and Recovery

Prior to the surgery, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni stated that Pope Francis was expected to make a full functional recovery.

The Prefecture of the Papal Household announced that all of the pope’s audiences have been canceled until June 18. Supporters and believers around the world have expressed their prayers and hopes for the pontiff’s swift recovery.

Resignation Letter in Advance

In a 2013 interview, Pope Francis disclosed that shortly after his election in 2013, he had prepared a letter of resignation in case of permanent medical incapacity. He handed the letter to then-Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

Papal resignations are extremely rare, with the last one occurring in 2013 when Pope Benedict XVI stepped down due to advanced age. The existence of the resignation letter demonstrates Pope Francis’ foresight and readiness to address potential future health challenges.
