Memorial Day took an unexpected turn as Republican presidential hopefuls Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump engaged in a heated exchange on social media.

The exchange began when DeSantis appeared on Fox & Friends and was asked about his prospects in the crucial Iowa caucus. In his response, DeSantis took a veiled swipe at Trump, highlighting their differences on the issue of Disney and implying that his stance would resonate with Iowa voters.

DeSantis criticized Trump for taking the side of Disney, accusing the company of sexualizing children and asserting that it contradicts the values of Florida and Iowa. These remarks did not sit well with Trump, who swiftly responded on social media, disputing DeSantis’ claims and pointing out his own popularity in the polls.

Trump’s tweet read, “Ron DeSanctimonious just stated, without correction on Fox & Friends, that I was ‘backing’ Disney. Wrong! Fox should have read my posted TRUTH on Disney, but that’s not the game they play.” Trump also highlighted his lead over President Joe Biden in the polls and mentioned his significant margin of victory in Florida compared to DeSantis.

In addition, Trump reposted a previous comment blaming DeSantis for what he called Disney’s “Woke and Disgusting” transformation during the Florida governor’s tenure. He suggested that DeSantis should have taken action earlier to prevent this alleged change.

The exchange between DeSantis and Trump raises several questions. It is unclear how an elected official can prevent a private company like Disney from operating within the boundaries of the law. Moreover, it seems contradictory for a candidate who advocates for small government and limited regulation to make such claims. Trump’s close monitoring of Fox News programming, despite being a vocal critic of the network, also raises eyebrows.

Furthermore, there is no concrete evidence to support DeSantis’ claim that Disney is a “multibillion-dollar company that sexualizes children.” However, among the GOP base, which pays close attention to these wedge issues, it is likely that more individuals would side with DeSantis on this matter than with Trump.

The clash between DeSantis and Trump underscores the competitive nature of the Republican primary race and the lengths candidates are willing to go to differentiate themselves. As the campaign progresses, it remains to be seen how these exchanges will shape the dynamics of the race and impact the candidates’ standing among voters.
