Though Queen Elizabeth II never publicly uttered a bad word about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, a source claimed the late monarch didn’t bite her tongue when talking about the Sussexes behind closed palace doors.

In a recent report, a source close to the British Royal Family has claimed that Queen Elizabeth branded Meghan Markle as “evil” during a drinks reception at a dinner hosted by the late monarch at Balmoral in August 2022, just a month before her passing.

The source, speaking exclusively to The Spectator’s Kara Kennedy, said that “everybody’s eyebrows hit the ceiling” upon hearing the Queen’s frank remarks about the Duchess of Sussex. The Queen’s alleged comments came at a time when Meghan and Prince Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family was at an all-time low after Meghan insinuated that someone in the family had subjected her to racism.

“At the drinks before the dinner, a small group were talking to the monarch and she explained that Harry meeting Meghan had become a complete catastrophe and described her as evil,” the insider told a news outlet. “By this point we all knew the queen’s health was in decline and she had months left, she seemed regretful about how things had panned out.”

“It was out of character for the queen to use such a word as ‘evil’ to describe Meghan, but she saw straight through her. It was a startling sentence to hear from the most forgiving woman on earth,” the source added.

The Spectator spoke to the insider about Queen Elizabeth’s words against Meghan.

The rift between the Sussexes and the Royal Family had opened up when Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties to pursue media opportunities in the US, although the seeds were arguably sown before ‘Megxit’. The most infamous incident came in 2021 when the Royal Family found themselves at the heart of a race row after Meghan insinuated she had been subject to racism during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. The allegations were shocking and rocked the institution of the British monarchy. The interview was watched by millions worldwide and was described by some as the worst crisis the Royal Family had faced since the death of Princess Diana.

During the interview, Oprah asked Meghan if she believed the Royal Family hadn’t wanted their son Archie to be a prince “because of his race”.

Meghan replied, “But I can give you an honest answer. In those months when I was pregnant … we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title’, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” Meghan refused to name who had made the remarks, saying that “I think that would be very damaging to them.”

In the aftermath of the interview, Harry and Meghan’s popularity in the UK nosedived. A YouGov poll conducted a few days after the interview was broadcast showed that 48% of Britons had a negative view of Harry, compared with 45% with a positive view, giving him a -3 net score. Meghan’s popularity also plummeted, with only 31% of respondents having a positive opinion of the Duchess of Sussex, while 58% viewed her negatively.

The latest revelation that the Queen allegedly branded Meghan as “evil” will no doubt further fuel the already strained relationship between the Sussexes and the Royal Family.

It remains to be seen how this will impact the public’s perception of the monarchy and whether the rift between the Sussexes and the institution will ever be healed. The monarchy has always been steeped in tradition and protocol, and the allegations made by Meghan Markle have raised important questions about the role of the British monarchy in the 21st century. Whether these questions will be answered remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Royal Family is facing one of its biggest challenges yet.
