WNBA star Brittney Griner remains detained in Russia after nearly five months in custody. In the latest trailer for HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted, LeBron James spoke his mind on the situation and criticized America’s efforts to bring her home.
“Now, how can she feel like America has her back?” James asked. “I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even wanna go back to America?’”
James’s full response and quotes were edited in the trailer, and the full episode won’t be out until July 15. But his comments are scathing, to say the least.
Griner was arrested in February for possessing vape cartridges containing hashish oil at a Russian airport.
She pleaded guilty to the charges Thursday, a development that came four days after her detention was extended to December by Russian authorities. Griner could face up to 10 years in prison.
President Joe Biden and his administration have been widely criticized for not getting Griner back to the United States from what the State Department has deemed wrongful detainment.
Just this past week, on July 5, Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard suggested Griner would be stateside if she were James.
“If it was LeBron, he’d be home, right?” Nygaard said. “It’s a statement about the value of women. It’s a statement about the value of a black person. It’s a statement about the value of a gay person. All of those things. We know it, and so that’s what hurts a little more.”
As of now, it’s unclear when Griner will be able to return home.

Griner brought cannabis to Russia. Stupid. Why should that person be released from custody with the known crime for Russia? How about the Marine, Mr. Whelan who’s been there for 4 years. Nor did I agree with the Marine that we did a prisoner swap for. We gave back to Russia a sniper and terrorist who is very dangerous. We got a jarhead bar brawling thug! She most likely (I do not know for sure) knew what she was doing but did it anyway. Thought she could be cute and nobody would notice. Well they did, now do the time for your crime and stop whining that America is racist because we want you to do your jail time. Problem is that our DOJ is saying she was wrongfully detained but has not explained why her detainment was wrong? As for James, I wish he would have been caught over there with something illegal, then maybe the news would stop giving his vile comments a forum! We should all boycott the NBA, they are loaded with these hypocrites that are rich from white money but now want to tell us how evil our society is.
Yes, I agree. If you go to another country, you should be aware of the laws of that country – and you should respect those laws. Americans (and others) shouldn’t expect the president to get them out of the trouble they got themselves into. And this is very bad timing. America has allied itself with the Ukrainians; Russia doesn’t like that and is not at all sympathetic to Ms. Griner’s plight. And the fact is: Biden has no authority in Russia and no right to tell Putin what to do. People should be careful when they are travelling abroad.

I just hope and pray that Griner is not released with conditions. That meaning, I hope Biden does not reduce the number of defensive weapons to Ukraine in exchange for her release.
Sports stars should not be above the law because they super stars in their own mind. She needs to shut up and face the music. When you apply for a visa you are given instructions as to what you cannot bring with you when you visit a foreign country. Did she think she was special or is it the fact she does not know how to read? She broke the law, she needs to live with that choice.

She won’t have to listen to “The National Anthem” in Russia. She needn’t stand for the Anthem or Old Glory in Russia. No need to bother with any of that in Russia.
She has it pretty good in Russia. Maybe her wife can immigrate/defect to Russia so they can be together.
