Trump ‘Furious’ Over Plan to Put His Name on Historical Landmark

President Donald Trump is forcefully denying a report that administration officials discussed adding his name to Ford’s Theatre, the historic Washington playhouse where Abraham Lincoln was shot.

The disputed report triggered a series of angry social media posts, with Trump dismissing the idea and accusing news organizations and Democrats of spreading falsehoods.

“Who would possibly want a name on such a tragic place?” Trump wrote in a Wednesday evening Truth Social post, calling the story “FAKE NEWS!”

The response followed a report from MS NOW that officials had discussed federal properties where Trump’s name could be added. Ford’s Theatre was reportedly among the locations mentioned, according to unnamed people familiar with the discussions. Other outlets subsequently reported on the claim and Trump’s denial.

But a crucial distinction remains: reported discussions among administration officials do not establish that Trump requested, approved or even knew about a proposal.

The account supplied no clear answer about how his name would be attached to the theater or how seriously the suggestion was being considered. It described a disputed idea, not an announced name change.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle also rejected the story. According to The Daily Beast, Ingle called the report “completely false” and challenged the credibility of its anonymous sources.

Trump returned to the subject Thursday morning, again denying that he wanted the theater named after him. In the posts reproduced by The Daily Beast, he attacked MS NOW and CNN before accusing the media and Democrats of working together against him.

The controversy comes amid a separate, public fight over Trump’s name at the Kennedy Center.

The Associated Press reported September 18 that Trump defended recognition for his administration’s work on that venue, pointing to $257 million Congress approved for repairs. A federal judge had blocked another effort to put Trump’s name on the building, while its board voted to close it indefinitely for repairs. Those documented actions provide background for the latest controversy, but they do not establish that the Ford’s Theatre claim is true.

Ford’s Theatre also has a history that extends well beyond the tragedy Trump referenced.

According to the National Park Service, John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the presidential box on April 14, 1865, while the president watched Our American Cousin. Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen boarding house, where he died the following morning.

That distinction matters: Lincoln was shot inside the theater, but he did not die there.

The building later served as offices and storage before reopening in 1968 after extensive restoration. Today, it preserves the assassination’s history while continuing to host live performances.

Ford’s Theatre’s own account describes a partnership between the National Park Service and the nonprofit Ford’s Theatre Society, with programming devoted to Lincoln’s life, leadership and legacy. The institution functions as both a historic destination and an active part of Washington’s cultural life.

For now, the central question remains unresolved: whether officials floated the idea despite the president’s rejection of it. The reporting reviewed does not establish an approved proposal, a design or a timetable for adding Trump’s name to Ford’s Theatre.
