A dream dolphin excursion in the Bahamas turned terrifying when a shark attacked a 37-year-old woman swimming several miles off the coast, authorities said.
The Austrian tourist was in the water about 3.5 miles off Bimini Island when the shark struck during the dolphin outing, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
The attack left the woman with serious injuries to her right ankle.
Emergency crews rushed her to the Bimini Community Clinic shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, according to police.
Because of the severity of her injuries, she was later airlifted to New Providence, home to Nassau and the Bahamas’ largest medical facilities, for further treatment.
Authorities have not released details about what type of shark was involved or exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the attack.
The incident occurred in waters off Bimini, a popular destination known for its clear turquoise seas, snorkeling, fishing and wildlife excursions.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
