Melania Throws Don Jr. Under the Bus

Melania Trump is making it clear she wants no part of the controversy swirling around Donald Trump Jr.’s lavish wedding celebrations and the Russian businessman who helped pay for them.

The first lady’s office said Melania has never had a relationship with Umar Kremlev, the Russian businessman and boxing executive who reportedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hosting portions of Don Jr.’s wedding weekend in the Bahamas.

“Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,” a spokesperson for Melania told the Daily Mail, according to published reports.

The spokesperson also said Melania played no role in organizing the wedding and knew nothing about its financial arrangements.

The statement notably focused only on Melania’s involvement and did not offer a defense of her 48-year-old stepson.

The controversy erupted after an investigation by ProPublica reported that Kremlev helped bankroll two nights of celebrations surrounding Don Jr.’s May marriage to Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson. ProPublica reported that Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for expenses that included renting a private island and putting on a fireworks display.

Don Jr. and Bettina later confirmed Kremlev’s involvement.

The couple described him as a “dear friend” and said he had generously hosted two nights of celebrations after their private wedding ceremony.

They called the arrangement an extraordinarily generous wedding gift and rejected suggestions that Kremlev’s generosity had any political motive.

Kremlev is president of the International Boxing Association and has well-documented ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has received state honors from Putin and has appeared publicly with the Russian leader.

President Donald Trump did not attend the wedding celebrations, and neither did Melania or their son Barron.

Trump has said he did not know Kremlev and was unaware of his involvement in the festivities.

Melania’s decision to distance herself from Kremlev is especially notable given her past public comments involving Putin and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In 2025, she sent Putin a letter urging him to consider the suffering of children affected by the war. Trump later publicly recounted how Melania repeatedly challenged his optimistic assessments of conversations with Putin by pointing out fresh Russian attacks in Ukraine.

Now, the Russian connection is hitting much closer to the Trump family.

And while Don Jr. and Bettina insist Kremlev’s lavish contribution was simply a gift from a friend, the revelation has already attracted attention in Washington.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has requested documents and information about Kremlev’s involvement and Don Jr.’s relationship with him.

For Melania, however, the message from her office is unmistakable: whatever happened behind the scenes of Don Jr.’s extravagant celebration, she says she had nothing to do with it.
