Melania Trump’s latest disappearing act is raising eyebrows in Washington after the first lady skipped Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral just days after missing another major political event.

The former first lady-turned-first lady was nowhere to be seen at Graham’s high-profile funeral on Tuesday, July 28, even as President Donald Trump attended and delivered remarks for one of his most loyal Republican allies. Graham, who died July 11, was honored at a service that drew top political figures and underscored his decades-long grip on Republican politics.

But as cameras panned the front rows, one conspicuous absence quickly became part of the story: Melania.

Her no-show came only days after she also skipped the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday, July 24, fueling fresh speculation about why the first lady has been missing from some of the administration’s most visible moments.

Now, one of her aides is offering an explanation.

Marc Beckman, an aide to Melania, appeared to respond to the backlash by highlighting her work on a housing initiative tied to foster youth. In a post shared to his Instagram story, Beckman pointed to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development about the First Lady’s Fostering the Future FYI Initiative, which has marked seven years and includes program enhancements aimed at helping vulnerable young people find housing stability and self-sufficiency.

The statement framed the effort as more than a safety-net program, describing housing as an investment in the next generation.

That explanation, however, has not stopped critics from questioning why Melania was absent from two headline-making events in less than a week — especially one honoring Graham, who had become one of Trump’s most prominent defenders in Washington.

Melania did issue a written tribute after Graham’s death, calling his passing “unexpected” and praising his years of public service.

“I am saddened by the unexpected passing of Senator Graham,” she said in the statement. “Lindsey devoted his life to the service of our nation, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his duties. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his enduring legacy.”

Still, the statement did little to quiet the chatter over her absence from the funeral itself.

Trump attended the service alongside Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Eric Trump and Lara Trump. The funeral became a major political moment, with Graham remembered as a towering Republican figure whose career spanned decades and whose loyalty to Trump helped define his later years in the Senate.

The service also produced its own Trump-related controversy after cameras appeared to catch the president closing his eyes during the funeral, sparking online speculation that he had fallen asleep. The White House denied that claim, saying Trump was simply reflecting on the loss of a close friend.

Melania, meanwhile, has kept a noticeably limited public schedule.

Her most recent major public appearance appears to have been at the FIFA World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19, when she joined Trump and their son Barron. She was also seen at Trump’s July 4 “Salute to America 250” celebration on the National Mall and attended UFC Freedom 250 on the White House South Lawn in June.

For a first lady who has long preferred a more private role than many of her predecessors, the absences may not be surprising. But the timing has made them impossible to ignore.

In a White House already defined by spectacle, loyalty tests and public displays of political power, Melania’s decision to stay away from Graham’s farewell has become another reminder that she continues to operate on her own terms — even when the cameras are waiting.

  1. She has an Iranian target on her back. She shouldn’t be going out in public. Leave her alone.
