A Fourth of July celebration in California turned horrifying when a young woman was violently thrown from a car during a reckless stunt — then allegedly run over by her own boyfriend as stunned witnesses watched in terror.

Alexis “Lexi” Hardheart, 20, was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in a Vallejo parking lot when the driver, identified by friends as her boyfriend, Alejandro Rodriguez Zetina, began doing high-speed “donuts,” according to KTVU.

The crowd had gathered in Solano County to watch fireworks on July 4 when several drivers reportedly began performing dangerous car stunts in the packed lot. What started as a wild holiday scene quickly turned into a nightmare.

Video of the incident captured the gut-wrenching moment Hardheart was flung from the vehicle mid-stunt.

“Oh… she fell off the car,” a woman could be heard saying in the footage.

Seconds later, the black car was seen speeding toward Hardheart as she lay helpless on the ground. The vehicle struck her, and according to the report, the driver did not stop to help.

Instead, he allegedly ran over her twice before driving away in an apparent attempt to flee the scene.

Vallejo police tracked down the driver hours later. He was arrested on reckless driving and hit-and-run charges.

“It was just terrifying,” Hardheart’s friend Kaylee Cartwright told KTVU.

Cartwright said she returned to the crash scene the following day and found her friend’s torn jacket and jeans still there.

“Hitting her could have been an accident, but just leaving her there… that’s not an accident at all,” she said.

Hardheart, who was preparing to start cosmetology school, is now facing a devastating medical battle. According to a family statement on a fundraiser, she suffered a shattered pelvis and two broken legs in the crash.

Doctors have warned her family that she will be “incredibly fortunate” if she ever walks again.

Hardheart has already undergone her first major surgery, during which doctors placed a metal rod in one of her legs. Her family said that procedure is only the beginning of what is expected to be a long and painful road to recovery.

The fundraiser described Hardheart as “kind and compassionate” and said the tragedy has turned her family’s world upside down.

Her mother has reportedly dropped everything to be by her daughter’s side as Hardheart continues fighting through severe injuries and an uncertain future.
