Cindy Crawford’s son Presley Gerber may have died from a drug overdose while staying at a rehabilitation facility, according to new reports — but officials have not yet determined his official cause of death.
Gerber, the 27-year-old model and only son of Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, died Sunday, Sept. 20, at a rehabilitation facility in the Los Angeles area, according to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
The Medical Examiner confirmed Monday that Gerber was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. and said the Santa Monica Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
TMZ, citing sources with direct knowledge of the case, reported that Gerber had been living with several other people in a separate residence on the grounds of the treatment facility when he was found unresponsive.
The outlet reported that the initial emergency call came in as a suspected overdose and that Gerber’s family was subsequently told investigators believed he had suffered a fatal overdose.
Police are reportedly treating the case as a suspected overdose and do not currently suspect foul play.
However, that is not yet an official finding.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not announced Gerber’s cause or manner of death, and an autopsy and toxicology testing are expected to be part of the investigation. Toxicology results can take additional time to complete, meaning a final determination may not come immediately.
Gerber’s family confirmed his death through a representative but has not publicly addressed the overdose report.
“The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time,” the representative said.
Gerber had spoken openly in recent years about his struggles with addiction, depression and mental health.
In a 2023 appearance on the Studio 22 podcast, Gerber said he hoped speaking publicly about his experiences could help other people going through similar struggles.

He later began sharing “Mental Health Mondays” posts on social media, using his platform to discuss topics that he said people — particularly men — often avoided talking about.
His struggles had also affected the family behind the scenes.
In an August 2026 Vogue interview, Presley’s younger sister, Kaia Gerber, spoke candidly about her brother’s years-long battle with addiction and how it shaped her own childhood and relationship with her family. She praised her brother for being willing to talk publicly about experiences that their famously private family might otherwise have kept out of the spotlight.
Presley also revealed earlier this year that he had undergone ibogaine treatment while attempting to overcome his addiction.
Ibogaine is a psychoactive substance that has attracted attention as a possible treatment for substance-use disorders, although it is not approved for medical use in the United States.
In a March social-media post about the experience, Presley described being frightened going into the treatment but hopeful that it could help him move forward.
His famous family publicly rallied around him.
Crawford commented that her son was a “warrior” and said she was proud of him, while Rande praised Presley for having the courage to confront what he was going through. Kaia also publicly celebrated her brother’s progress.
Presley had followed his mother into the fashion industry at a young age, signing with IMG Models as a teenager.
He went on to model for major fashion houses and brands including Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana and appeared alongside his mother in Pepsi’s 2018 Super Bowl commercial.
His younger sister also became one of the fashion industry’s best-known models before expanding into acting. Kaia currently stars in Ryan Murphy’s FX adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ “The Shards.”
For now, the reported overdose remains a suspected cause rather than an official determination.
The Medical Examiner’s investigation, including the autopsy and toxicology findings, will ultimately determine what caused Gerber’s death.
He is survived by his mother Cindy Crawford, father Rande Gerber and sister Kaia Gerber.
