Elaine Chao has finally broken her silence about the health of her 84-year-old husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, weeks after he was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home and rushed to the hospital.
But instead of calming speculation, the former Trump administration official’s statement may raise even more questions.
Chao, 73, revealed through a spokesperson that she did not immediately return to the United States when McConnell was hospitalized because his condition “did not warrant an immediate return.”
“The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family’s philanthropic endeavors,” the statement said. “During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. The Senator’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.”
The admission came after days of questions from The Daily Beast and growing speculation about McConnell’s true condition.
It was also released just hours after conservative CNN commentator Scott Jennings claimed McConnell personally called him from his hospital bed Tuesday morning and spoke with him for 17 minutes.
Chao’s spokesperson confirmed that she has since returned to the United States. However, her team did not say exactly when she returned, who found McConnell unconscious or provide any additional details about his current health.
Chao and McConnell have been married since 1993. She is the daughter of a Chinese-American shipping billionaire and has held several powerful government positions, including transportation secretary during President Donald Trump’s first term and labor secretary under President George W. Bush.
Questions have also emerged about Chao’s activities in China during her husband’s hospitalization.
On June 17, just three days after McConnell was reportedly found unconscious, Chao met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing. Photographs of the meeting were released by China’s official state news agency.
Chao does not currently hold an official U.S. government position, and her spokesperson did not explain how the high-level meeting was arranged.
Her relationship with Trump has also been strained since she resigned as transportation secretary on Jan. 7, 2021, one day after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Chao said at the time that the violence had “deeply troubled” her and that she could not simply set it aside.
McConnell reportedly suffered an apparent heart attack at his Washington home on June 14, according to audio from an emergency dispatch call obtained by independent journalist Desirée Townsend.
In the recording, emergency responders were reportedly told that CPR was in progress because of a possible cardiac arrest.
McConnell’s office has provided few details about what happened or how serious his condition may have been.
The Kentucky Republican’s top aide, Terry Carmack, who is reportedly set to earn more than $226,000 this year, has not publicly answered repeated questions from The Daily Beast about the senator’s condition.
On July 2, McConnell spokesperson Stephanie Penn said the senator was “working closely with his staff” but did not elaborate.
Penn later said the office would “be sure to keep you updated,” but reportedly did not respond to a detailed list of questions about McConnell’s hospitalization, recovery or current ability to perform his duties.
The silence has fueled a wave of speculation from some of the same right-wing figures who previously attacked Democrats over transparency surrounding former President Joe Biden’s age and health.
Far-right activist and Trump ally Laura Loomer claimed that a “high-level source close to the White House” told her McConnell was “brain dead.” Loomer offered no public evidence to support the explosive allegation, and it remains unverified.
“Biggest cover up ever right now happening regarding Mitch McConnell,” Loomer wrote on X. “I remember when we mocked the Democrats for doing the same thing with Joe Biden.”
Former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has increasingly criticized some members of the MAGA movement, also weighed in on the secrecy surrounding McConnell’s condition.
During an interview with TMZ DC on Tuesday, Greene referred to McConnell as a “vegetable” and questioned Chao’s trip to China. She also called the former Cabinet secretary a “communist Chinese spy,” without presenting evidence to support the accusation.
McConnell has experienced several highly publicized health problems in recent years.
He has suffered multiple falls, appeared to freeze during press conferences and has frequently used a wheelchair while traveling through the Capitol. Those incidents have repeatedly prompted questions about whether the longtime senator remains healthy enough to continue serving.
For now, McConnell’s office insists he remains engaged with his staff. But with few concrete details being released—and even his wife saying she saw no reason to rush home after he reportedly received CPR—the mystery surrounding one of Washington’s most powerful Republicans is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
