No One Shows Up to Trump’s State Fair

President Donald Trump’s big patriotic birthday bash for America was supposed to be a can’t-miss celebration on the National Mall.

Instead, some of his own Republican allies may have accidentally given the public a very different picture.

A wave of MAGA lawmakers posted upbeat selfies, reels, and promotional videos from the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., apparently hoping to hype up the White House-backed event tied to America’s 250th birthday celebration.

But there was just one problem.

Their own videos seemed to show wide-open grass, empty booths, thin crowds, and a Ferris wheel spinning with barely anyone around to enjoy it.

What was billed as a grand patriotic spectacle suddenly looked more like a political vanity project struggling to fill the lawn.

Rep. Blake Moore of Utah posted an Instagram reel from the fairgrounds urging visitors to stop by his state’s booth. But the clip did not exactly scream “packed celebration.” Moore stood in what appeared to be a mostly empty park, with an empty Ferris wheel turning behind him.

“Down here at the Great American State Fair — it’s gonna be open for two weeks. So if you’re here traveling in Washington, D.C. at all over the 4th, make sure to come check out the Utah booth,” Moore said in the video.

Then came the part that sounded less like a casual invite and more like a plea.

“Contact our office if there’s any help that you need to organize things or tours or get more information,” he added. “Please, please reach out. We’d love to help out in that way.”

Rep. French Hill of Arkansas also tried to promote the event, posting a reel from the top of the Ferris wheel. But instead of showing a bustling fair packed with excited families, the view behind him showed a massive stretch of empty National Mall grass rolling toward the Capitol.

“I hope if you have any plans to visit Washington for the 4th of July that you let us know,” Hill said from the ride.

Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas posted his own cheerful montage from the fair, showing himself and his wife walking around the grounds, riding the Ferris wheel, checking out an agriculture display, and visiting the Kansas booth.

But once again, the happy edit seemed to undercut the message. Much of the background appeared noticeably quiet, with large empty areas visible as the couple moved through the event.

Rep. Randy Feenstra of Iowa shared photos of his team volunteering at Iowa’s booth. One image taken from outside the pavilion showed only a small number of people wandering nearby.

“I hope those visiting take time to visit Iowa’s booth!” he wrote.

Rep. Michael Baumgartner of Washington tried to turn his state’s absence into a political attack, but his own photo may have proved the bigger point.

“Unfortunately Governor Bob Ferguson chose NOT to have Washington State officially participate in THE GREAT AMERICAN STATE FAIR, but I couldn’t let this stand, so I came down to man the nearly empty booth,” Baumgartner wrote on X.

The photo showed Baumgartner standing on the National Mall lawn in front of the Ferris wheel, with only a handful of people visible in the background.

Baumgartner said he came to personally stamp visitors’ “passports” after Washington declined to send an official delegation.

The awkward posts came after reports that the fair opened with a string of problems, including melting ice cream, power issues, sparse crowds, and several empty state and territory booths.

According to USA Today, booths for Connecticut, Oregon, Washington, Maine, Alaska, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were left with little more than backdrops, chairs, or carpets after officials declined to participate.

The fair was organized by Freedom 250 to mark America’s 250th birthday and has been promoted as a “world-class exposition” and a modern-day World’s Fair.

But the scenes coming from the National Mall looked far less like a historic celebration and far more like a glossy Trump-era production that could not quite deliver the crowds.

The event includes state pavilions, executive-branch displays, a Ferris wheel, a rodeo, Trump-themed touches, replica Trump passports, an Abraham Lincoln hologram, and a model of the president’s proposed triumphal arch.

On paper, it sounded like a massive celebration of American pride.

In practice, even the president’s allies appeared to be posting evidence that parts of the event were struggling to live up to the hype.

For an event meant to showcase Trump’s version of patriotic grandeur, the most damaging footage may not have come from his critics at all.

It came straight from MAGA’s own camera rolls.
