Melania Trump reportedly put her foot down when one of the most powerful men in the world wanted to spend the night at the White House — but President Donald Trump allegedly sided with his billionaire buddy instead.

According to explosive new claims, the first lady was not thrilled when Elon Musk asked to sleep over at the White House during his time working closely with the Trump administration. But despite Melania’s reported objection, Trump allegedly gave Musk the green light.

The claim comes from the new book Regime Change by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, who allege that Musk, then serving as the head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, became more than just a frequent visitor in Washington. He allegedly became an overnight guest.

And not just anywhere.

According to the book, Musk spent several nights in the famed Lincoln Bedroom.

The alleged White House sleepovers reportedly caused tension behind the scenes, with Melania said to be against the arrangement. While the first lady has generally been described as gracious toward visitors, this particular guest apparently crossed a line.

Trump, however, allegedly overruled her.

The book claims Musk also stayed with friends on other nights and even told associates he had been using a sleeping bag on the floor of his office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Musk himself later admitted to reporters that he had stayed at the White House more than once.

“Sometimes I stay at the White House,” Musk said in May 2025, according to the report.

The tech billionaire insisted the arrangement was not his idea. In Musk’s telling, Trump invited him during a trip aboard Air Force One after asking where he planned to stay.

When Musk said he did not know, Trump allegedly offered up the White House.

“The president’s, very, very, I guess we’re good friends and we’ll be on Air Force One or Marine One and then he’s like, ‘Hey do you want to stay over?’ and I’m like, ‘Sure,’” Musk said.

Musk also claimed Trump personally showed him around the Lincoln Bedroom.

“And then he gave me a tour of the Lincoln Bedroom and… oh, this is cool,” Musk said.

“I didn’t request it, to be sure,” he added.

The world’s richest man even praised Trump as a surprisingly attentive host, saying the president would call late at night to make sure he had snacks.

“He’ll actually call, like late at night, and say, like, ‘Oh, by the way, make sure you get some ice cream from the kitchen,’” Musk reportedly told reporters.

Musk said he ate “a whole tub” of caramel Häagen-Dazs, joking, “I mean, don’t tell RFK.”

“He’s actually a very good host,” Musk added.

But the cozy relationship would not last.

Musk left his DOGE role at the end of May and later publicly clashed with Trump, including attacking him over the failure to release the Epstein files.

The alleged White House sleepover drama is not the only behind-the-scenes clash involving Melania described in Regime Change.

The book also claims Trump and Melania battled over who would have the better private room inside the White House. According to Haberman and Swan, Trump allegedly moved decorative items from the second-floor corridor into his own bedroom during the early weeks of the administration.

At times, the book claims, Trump carried the objects himself as he rearranged the private quarters.

When staff reportedly reminded him that some of the items had been personally selected by Melania, Trump allegedly made it clear he did not care.

The authors described the scene as almost competitive, claiming Trump seemed “determined to have the better room.”

The allegations paint a striking picture of a White House where Trump’s personal whims, billionaire alliances and domestic tensions collided behind closed doors.

For Melania, according to the book, Musk’s overnight stays may have been one guest too many.

But in Trump’s White House, even the first lady reportedly did not always get the final word.
