Donald Trump’s big MAGA birthday bash is starting to look less like a patriotic blowout and more like a political train wreck.
Even Vanilla Ice, one of the few performers still publicly attached to the Trump-endorsed Great American State Fair, admitted he does not actually know whether the event is still happening.
The 58-year-old rapper, whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, appeared on Fox News with Laura Ingraham on Thursday and seemed just as confused as everyone else about the fate of the troubled celebration.
The Great American State Fair was originally set to run from June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of America’s 250th birthday festivities. But the event quickly became engulfed in chaos after several artists backed out, saying they had not been told about the fair’s Trump connection before being booked.
What was supposed to be a massive patriotic party has instead become another reminder of how politically toxic Trump’s brand remains for much of the entertainment world.
Big-name performers including Martina McBride, Milli Vanilli, The Commodores, Young MC and Poison frontman Bret Michaels all distanced themselves from the event after its connection to Trump became clear. That left Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida and Freedom Williams of C+C Music Factory as some of the last remaining acts who had not publicly walked away.
Trump, clearly irritated by the cancellations, lashed out at the artists who bailed. He accused them of getting the “yips,” mocked their talent, complained about their fees and floated the idea of canceling the entire fair.
Then things got even messier.
On Thursday, Trump appeared to announce a rival event of his own, saying he would headline a June 24 rally with MAGA-friendly performers Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio. In his Truth Social post, Trump suggested his team had told the original performers to stay home.
“We don’t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we’ve told them all to stay home,” Trump wrote. “All we want is you, me, a few speakers, and the Greatest Music ever played, the same Music you have listened to for years!”
That post seemed to raise a major question: Was the Great American State Fair effectively dead?
Apparently, nobody told Vanilla Ice.
During his Fox News appearance, Ingraham tried to make sense of the situation, telling the rapper that the concert now appeared to be “morphing into a rally” on June 24.
“The rally is going to have some of the greatest music ever played,” Ingraham said, before suggesting that she assumed Vanilla Ice would still be involved.
But the rapper admitted he had not been given a clear answer.
“I hope so,” he said. “I don’t even know, I’m here marinating. But I’m honored to even be invited for this and I’ll be there, no matter what. This is gonna be an epic birthday for our country.”
It was an awkward moment for an event that was once promoted as an “unforgettable celebration of America’s 250th.” The fair’s website reportedly no longer lists musical artists, fueling more questions about whether the original concert lineup has collapsed completely.
Vanilla Ice has previously performed for Trump, including at a Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve party this year. Video shared by Donald Trump Jr. showed the former president dancing at his table as the rapper performed his 1990 hit “Ice Ice Baby.”
When Ingraham asked whether he would dance with Trump again, Vanilla Ice did not hesitate.
“Heck yes, man,” he said. “I’ve danced with him before and I’ll do it again.”
Ingraham, meanwhile, blasted the artists who dropped out of the fair, calling them “spineless” and suggesting they were either consumed by hatred for Trump or afraid of music industry executives who oppose him.
The Fox News host said it was a “sad commentary” that musicians could not put politics aside for a national celebration. She even said former Presidents Obama, Clinton and Biden should attend, before adding that “Trump should invite them.”
Vanilla Ice tried to strike a unity note, saying, “Everybody’s invited, not divided.”
But the optics remain brutal for Trump.
A supposedly grand celebration of America’s 250th birthday has become tangled in artist cancellations, unclear scheduling, dueling events and a headliner who does not appear to know what he has actually been booked to perform at.
For a president who has long bragged about crowd size, star power and showmanship, the unraveling fair is a particularly embarrassing spectacle.
Trump first floated the idea of ditching the original event on Sunday, saying he wanted a “giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250” instead of relying on “overpriced singers” whose music he called boring.
Now, with the fair in limbo and the lineup gutted, Trump may get exactly what he asked for: a rally built around himself.
The only problem is that even some of the performers still on board do not seem to know whether the show is actually still on.
