President Donald Trump wanted a massive patriotic music celebration on the National Mall. Instead, the event is turning into another public relations nightmare — and Jimmy Kimmel was more than happy to pile on.
The late-night host took aim at Trump on Monday night after the president lashed out over artists backing away from his upcoming Freedom 250 celebration, a late June-to-early July music festival tied to the Great American State Fair.
The event was supposed to be a star-spangled spectacle. But according to the original report, the lineup has been falling apart fast, with major acts either dropping out or insisting they never agreed to participate in the first place.
That appeared to send Trump into a furious Truth Social rant.
“I don’t want so-called ‘Artists’ that get paid far too much money, who aren’t happy,” Trump wrote, according to the report. “I only want to be surrounded by Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN.”
For Kimmel, that line was too easy.
“That’s right. He only wants to be surrounded by happy people,” Kimmel joked as he showed the post to his audience.
Then came the punchline.
Kimmel put up a photo of Trump sitting beside first lady Melania Trump at the 2017 Inaugural Lunch on Capitol Hill. In the image, both appear stern and unsmiling — a moment that has been dissected for years by critics and social media users who have long analyzed Melania’s public body language around her husband.
“For instance,” Kimmel said, “this photograph of his wife pictured at their evening grimace.”
The audience laughed as Kimmel used Trump’s own demand for “happy people” against him, turning a political meltdown over a music festival into another viral late-night dig at the president.
The Freedom 250 situation has become increasingly embarrassing for Trump and his allies. Bret Michaels, Young MC, The Commodores and even the fake singer from Milli Vanilli have reportedly backed away from the event.
Country star Martina McBride also distanced herself, saying she had been “presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event,” but later felt that description was misleading.
The problem, according to the report, began when artists learned more about the event’s ties to MAGA politics. What was pitched as a broad patriotic celebration quickly became a political headache.
Kimmel summarized the collapse with his usual sarcasm.
“By Saturday, almost every one of the performers either said they never agreed to be part of it in the first place or dropped out of it,” he told viewers. “It was as if they’d been booked on a hantavirus cruise.”
The host also mocked the sheer oddity of the moment, joking that Trump is now fighting battles on multiple fronts.
“We’re only 16 months into his second term now,” Kimmel said. “Somehow, this man is at war with Iran and Milli Vanilli.”
For Trump, the Freedom 250 concert was meant to project patriotic unity and cultural strength. Instead, it has become a spectacle of celebrity walkbacks, angry social media posts and late-night ridicule.
And for Kimmel, one photo of Melania’s unsmiling face was all it took to turn Trump’s “happy people” demand into a national punchline.
