Joy Behar is stepping away from “The View” for a short break, but the longtime liberal co-host is not exactly disappearing quietly.
Behar revealed on Tuesday that she is taking a brief hiatus from the ABC daytime show so she can head overseas for a theater run in Europe.
The announcement came during “The View: Behind the Table” podcast, when executive producer Brian Teta casually noted that Behar would be off the show for a little while.
“This is your last podcast for a little bit, because next week you’re not going to be here,” Teta told her.
Behar then explained that the show had made her “bank” weekend podcast episodes ahead of her time away. She also told Teta to go ahead and reveal the reason viewers would not be seeing her in her usual seat.
The 83-year-old TV veteran said she is flying to Paris this week before heading to London, where she will perform in her play, “My First Ex-Husband,” at the Boulevard Theatre in the West End.
“I fly to Paris this week, and then I go take the tunnel to London after a week,” Behar said. “And I’ll be in London a second week doing my play, ‘My First Ex-Husband,’ at the Boulevard Theatre in the West End.”
Behar said the production will feature her and Jackie Hoffman playing two American women, alongside two British actresses.
“Doesn’t that sound like fun?” she said.
Her temporary exit comes after yet another headline-making stretch for “The View,” a show that regularly turns everyday political debates into viral television moments.
Behar recently drew criticism from her own co-hosts during a discussion about President Donald Trump’s feud with the Pope. During the segment, she claimed that Jesus Christ did not declare himself to be the Messiah, a remark that quickly prompted pushback at the table.
Now, as Behar takes her act across the Atlantic, ABC is already preparing to keep the chairs filled.
Teta revealed that Sheryl Underwood will return as one of the guest co-hosts. Underwood previously filled in while Alyssa Farah Griffin was on maternity leave.
Left-wing podcast host Kara Swisher is also expected to fill in during Behar’s absence.
Ana Navarro, who typically appears on Mondays and Fridays, will also help cover the table. Whoopi Goldberg, who usually takes Fridays off, is set to appear on Fridays while Behar is away.
Behar normally does not co-host “The View” on Mondays.
The short hiatus marks a rare break from the Hot Topics table for Behar, who has become one of the most recognizable and polarizing personalities on daytime television.
For now, “The View” will go on without her. But knowing Behar, her return will probably come with a few opinions ready to explode the moment she sits back down.
