Melania Trump just notched a major courtroom victory in a messy legal fight tied to one of the most radioactive names in American politics: Jeffrey Epstein.

A federal judge has thrown out author Michael Wolff’s lawsuit against the first lady after Wolff tried to get ahead of a threatened $1 billion defamation battle over comments he made linking Melania to Epstein’s elite social orbit.

The case was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil, who was appointed by Donald Trump. In a sharp 45-page ruling, the judge made clear that Wolff could not drag the first lady into federal court simply because she had threatened to sue him.

“Plaintiff asks for a declaration that, if the first lady sues him, he deserves to win. That is not how the federal courts work,” Vyskocil wrote.

The ruling marks a win for Melania. But the judge also seemed unimpressed with the behavior on both sides, accusing the parties of “an inappropriate level of tactical gamesmanship” and saying the court would not be pulled into what she called “an abusively presented spat.”

The legal fight began after Melania’s lawyers allegedly threatened Wolff with a staggering $1 billion lawsuit over remarks he made in interviews and podcast appearances. Wolff, a longtime Trump biographer and frequent critic of the former and current president’s inner circle, responded by filing an anti-SLAPP lawsuit in October 2025.

Anti-SLAPP laws are designed to protect journalists, authors and critics from lawsuits that are allegedly meant to intimidate them into silence. Wolff argued that Melania’s legal threat was exactly that: a pressure campaign meant to scare him away from discussing the Trumps, Epstein and the wealthy social circles they once moved in.

At the center of the dispute were explosive claims involving how Melania and Donald Trump allegedly met, Epstein’s social network, and allegations about Trump’s private life. Wolff also referenced alleged recordings tied to Epstein.

Wolff insisted he never accused Melania of being involved in Epstein’s crimes. Instead, he argued that his comments were either protected opinion or commentary on matters of public interest.

Melania’s team fired back by arguing that a legal threat letter is not the same thing as an actual lawsuit. The judge agreed, ruling that Wolff was trying to litigate a case before Melania had actually filed one.

That distinction proved fatal to Wolff’s case.

The ruling does not decide whether Wolff’s comments were true or false. It also does not decide whether Melania could win a defamation case if she chooses to file one later. Instead, the judge ruled that Wolff’s attempt to preemptively win that future fight was not something the federal court could entertain.

Still, the case pulled fresh attention back to the Trump family’s long-running Epstein problem, a political and public relations headache that has continued to haunt Donald Trump’s orbit for years.

Melania has denied being friends with Epstein, while acknowledging that she and Donald Trump were sometimes in the same circles as the disgraced financier.

“Donald and I were invited to the same parties as Epstein from time to time, since overlapping in social circles is common in New York City and Palm Beach,” she previously said. “I have never been friends with Epstein.”

After the ruling, Melania’s spokesperson Nick Clemens said the first lady was standing firm.

“She is proud to continue standing up to, and fighting against, those who spread malicious and defamatory falsehoods,” he said.

For Wolff, the dismissal is a major setback. He had reportedly raised about $800,000 from supporters to help fund the legal battle, framing the case as a fight over free speech and press intimidation.

For Melania, it is a clear legal victory.

But politically, the story may not be over. In the Trump era, even a courtroom win can keep the spotlight on the very scandal everyone involved claims they want to put behind them.
