A terrifying scene erupted just outside the White House on Saturday evening when a gunman reportedly pulled a weapon from a bag and opened fire near one of the most heavily guarded locations in America.
The suspect was shot by U.S. Secret Service officers and later died at a nearby hospital, according to officials. A bystander was also wounded in the chaos, though authorities have not yet said whether that person was hit by the gunman’s bullets or by return fire from federal officers. The gunfire broke out shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the northwestern corner of the White House grounds. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time, but officials said he was not harmed or directly impacted. (CBS News)
For several terrifying moments, the center of American power was thrown into lockdown.
Witnesses described hearing what sounded like a burst of gunfire, with reporters on the White House grounds saying they were rushed inside by Secret Service agents as the danger unfolded. Some journalists reported hearing roughly 20 to 30 shots, a stunning number for an area where even a sudden noise can trigger a massive federal response.
ABC News correspondent Selina Wang said she was recording a report on the White House North Lawn when the shots rang out. In a video posted to social media, the sound of gunfire can be heard before she quickly drops for cover and is moved to safety with other members of the press.
According to the Secret Service, the suspect approached a security checkpoint, pulled out a weapon and began firing at officers. Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. (AP News)
The identity of the gunman has not been officially released by authorities, and investigators have not yet publicly confirmed a motive.
The wounded bystander’s condition also remained unclear Saturday night, adding another troubling question to an already explosive incident.
The shooting instantly raised fresh concerns about political violence, public safety and the constant threat facing federal law enforcement in a country where gunfire has become horrifyingly routine. Even outside the White House, a site protected by layers of security, a single armed person was still able to spark a deadly confrontation in broad daylight.
Authorities secured the area after the shooting, with law enforcement officers placing evidence markers near the scene. The FBI is assisting the Secret Service with the investigation. (CBS News)
For the press corps, tourists and workers in the area, the evening quickly turned from an ordinary Saturday in Washington into a frightening reminder of how fast violence can erupt near the nation’s most symbolic address.
The investigation remains active, and officials are expected to release more details as they determine who the gunman was, why he opened fire and how the bystander was struck.
