Former First Lady Michelle Obama is opening up about one of the most painful chapters of her life — revealing she suffered a “devastating” miscarriage before eventually turning to IVF treatments with husband Barack Obama to conceive daughters Malia and Sasha.

During the May 13 episode of her “IMO Podcast,” Michelle spoke candidly about the emotional struggle she faced while trying to start a family, admitting she and Barack spent years trying unsuccessfully to have children naturally.

“I got pregnant once and miscarried, which was devastating,” Michelle said during the deeply personal conversation. “We tried and tried and tried, and we had to do IVF for both girls.”

The 62-year-old former first lady said the experience left her emotionally shattered at the time, especially because conversations around miscarriage and fertility struggles were far less common when she was going through it.

Michelle explained that many women silently carry the pain of pregnancy loss because society rarely talks openly about fertility issues, miscarriages, or the realities of aging and conception.

“We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken,” she previously admitted during a past interview promoting her bestselling memoir, Becoming.

In the memoir, Michelle described the miscarriage as physically and emotionally crushing, recalling the excitement she and Barack initially felt after finally seeing a positive pregnancy test — only to have that joy ripped away weeks later.

“We had one pregnancy test come back positive, which caused us both to forget every worry and swoon with joy,” she wrote. “But a couple of weeks later I had a miscarriage, which cratered any optimism we felt.”

The heartbreaking loss ultimately pushed the couple toward in vitro fertilization treatments. Michelle revealed she underwent IVF at age 34 after realizing “the biological clock is real” and fertility challenges were becoming impossible to ignore.

The former first lady also criticized the stigma surrounding women’s reproductive health, arguing that too many women are left feeling isolated because honest conversations about fertility remain taboo.

“I think it’s the worst thing that we do to each other as women — not share the truth about our bodies and how they work,” she said.

Despite the painful journey, Michelle said everything eventually felt worth it after welcoming daughters Malia Obama and Sasha Obama, whom she called “perfect babies.”

The emotional revelation comes as rumors and speculation about the Obamas’ marriage continue to swirl online. Though the couple has remained publicly united, Barack recently acknowledged there has been “tension” in their relationship at times — particularly during the chaos and political battles surrounding President Donald Trump.

“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her,” Barack admitted in a recent interview, saying the pressures of politics have occasionally frustrated Michelle.

Still, after more than three decades of marriage, the former first couple continues to present a united front — even as Michelle’s latest comments offer an unusually raw glimpse into the private heartbreak they endured long before life in the White House.
