Nearly 30 years after college freshman Kristin Smart vanished without a trace, investigators say they may have uncovered disturbing new evidence tied to the man convicted of killing her.

Authorities in California revealed this week that possible signs of human remains were discovered at a property connected to convicted killer Paul Flores — the former classmate long believed to be responsible for Smart’s disappearance.

Smart was just 19 years old when she vanished after a night out with friends in 1996 while attending California Polytechnic State University. The case haunted the country for decades, becoming one of America’s most infamous unsolved missing person mysteries.

Flores, who was the last known person seen with Smart, denied any involvement for years before finally being convicted of her murder in 2022. But even after the conviction, one huge question remained unanswered: Where is Kristin Smart’s body?

Now, investigators believe they may finally be getting closer to the truth.

On Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office searched the home of Flores’ mother in Arroyo Grande and uncovered evidence they say points to human remains once being on the property.

Sheriff Ian Parkinson made the bombshell announcement during a press briefing, telling reporters the evidence strongly suggests a body may have been hidden there at some point.

“We believe that based on what we’re looking at evidence-wise, scientific-wise, that a human’s remains were there at one time, or still there,” Parkinson said.

While authorities stopped short of confirming the remains belong to Smart, the revelation has reignited national attention around the horrifying case.

Smart disappeared after attending an off-campus party during her freshman year. Friends later said Flores walked her home because she was intoxicated — but she was never seen again.

For years, her devastated family fought to keep the case alive as investigators struggled to gather enough evidence to charge Flores. Smart was officially declared dead in 2002, though no body had ever been recovered.

The breakthrough finally came in 2021 when Flores was arrested and later convicted of murder. Prosecutors argued he attempted to rape Smart before killing her and hiding her body.

Even from prison, Flores has continued to insist he is innocent.

Now, with this grisly new discovery, investigators appear to believe the full story may still be buried beneath decades of secrets.

And for Kristin Smart’s family, the nightmare may not be over just yet.
