A tense security scare unfolded just after midnight Sunday when shots were fired near the White House, sending law enforcement scrambling around one of the most heavily guarded locations in the country.

According to the U.S. Secret Service, the gunfire broke out near Lafayette Park, the historic public square just north of the White House. Agents and officers quickly launched a sweeping search of the park and surrounding streets, but the shooter was nowhere to be found.

“A thorough search of the park and the surrounding area was conducted, and no suspect was located,” Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement posted on X.

Authorities are now working to track down a person of interest as well as a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting. The Secret Service said it is coordinating with the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police as the investigation remains active.

The alarming incident unfolded while President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House, adding even more intensity to an already fraught moment. While officials said White House operations are continuing as normal, security in the area has been noticeably tightened in the wake of the overnight gunfire.

So far, investigators have not released details about a possible motive, whether anyone was injured, or what may have led to the shots being fired so close to the presidential residence.

The episode is sure to raise fresh questions about public safety, security preparedness, and the increasingly volatile atmosphere surrounding the nation’s capital during Trump’s presidency.
