As Americans keep getting slammed at the pump, Donald Trump seems to have his mind on something else entirely: a statue of himself.

In a moment that quickly lit up critics online, the president appeared to shrug off a discussion about rising gas prices during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, March 26, and instead zeroed in on the possibility of getting a monument built in his honor.

The bizarre exchange happened as Interior Secretary Doug Burgum was explaining how increasing Venezuelan oil production could help lower gas prices in the United States. Burgum told Trump that Venezuelan Americans and renewed oil output could have a real impact on American refineries along the Gulf Coast, ultimately easing costs for drivers.

But before that point could go any further, Trump abruptly changed the subject.

“Forget that, when are they going to do the statue?” he asked, catching several officials in the room off guard before laughter broke out.

The comment came after Burgum suggested that, during a recent visit to Venezuela, he got the sense that officials there wanted to build a statue of Trump. Rather than treating it like a joke and moving on, Trump leaned in.

“That would be a great honor,” he said.

For critics, the moment perfectly captured what they see as Trump’s never-ending obsession with himself, even as everyday Americans are struggling with real economic pain. Social media users wasted no time tearing into the clip, with many calling it embarrassing, tone-deaf, and deeply revealing.

One critic blasted the president for saying “the quiet part out loud,” while another argued that everyone in the room seemed to know he was serious. Others pointed to the spectacle of top officials laughing along as gas prices and global tensions continue to weigh on millions of people.

To Trump’s opponents, it was another reminder that his instinct is almost always to turn the spotlight back on himself.

And this is far from the first time Trump’s ego has become a headline. He has long been accused of treating politics like personal branding, from plastering his name on buildings to embracing over-the-top imagery that feeds his larger-than-life persona. He also faced backlash after an AI-generated vision connected to Gaza featured a giant golden statue of him towering over the scene, with critics calling it disturbing and delusional.

That controversy reignited broader concerns about Trump’s fixation on image, power, and spectacle. For many liberals, this latest Cabinet room detour only added to the sense that the president remains more interested in feeding his own mythology than focusing on the problems hitting working families.

Ironically, Trump did get a statue of sorts in 2025, though not one his supporters were likely hoping for. An artist collective installed towering statues showing Trump and Jeffrey Epstein holding hands on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of a provocative public statement. The statues were quickly removed, but the images spread fast and sparked another wave of controversy around Trump’s past ties to Epstein.

Now, with Americans worried about costs, conflict, and instability, Trump’s latest statue obsession is landing as more than just another weird soundbite. To critics, it is a painfully awkward glimpse into where his priorities really are.
