President Donald Trump is under fire after appearing to pin early war talk on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—in a moment critics say exposed a brewing blame game.
During remarks in Tennessee, Trump recalled internal discussions on Iran, then turned directly to Hegseth: “Pete… you were the first one to speak up… ‘Let’s do it.’”
Hegseth forced a tight smile as the comment landed—instantly triggering backlash online.

Critics erupted, accusing Trump of setting up his defense chief as the fall guy if things spiral.
“The next scapegoat,” one wrote. “When it goes bad, blame Pete,” another added.
Lawmakers are already questioning Hegseth’s competence. Rep. James Walkinshaw said he’s “embarrassed” watching him in briefings, claiming he “can’t answer detailed questions.”
Rep. Pat Ryan went further, blasting Hegseth as “desperate” and calling for his removal.
Was Trump just praising his team—or quietly shifting blame before things explode?
Because if tensions with Iran worsen, critics say one thing is clear: the finger-pointing may have already begun.
