A chilling old interview with Michelle Duggar is back in the spotlight — and critics say it hits very differently now.
Years before the family was rocked by yet another scandal, the Duggar matriarch openly described a series of strict, eyebrow-raising rules inside the household — including a warning that “little ones don’t sit on big boys’ laps.”
Now, with fresh allegations emerging against another Duggar son, those comments are igniting outrage all over again.
In a resurfaced 2015 interview with Megyn Kelly, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar attempted to explain how they handled the fallout from eldest son Josh Duggar’s past misconduct.
What they revealed shocked many then — and is raising even more questions today.
Michelle detailed a tightly controlled home environment where children were rarely left alone together.
“We don’t let boys babysit. They don’t play hide and seek together. Two don’t go off and hide,” she said at the time.
She went even further, outlining strict physical boundaries between siblings.
“You’re not alone in a room with someone else… you’ll always be out, visible,” Michelle said. “Little ones don’t sit on big boys’ laps — or even other family members — unless it’s your daddy.”
The rules, she insisted, were “boundaries we’ve learned.”
According to multiple interviews, the Duggar home operated under intense supervision following the earlier scandal involving Josh.
Family members revealed boys and girls were separated into different sleeping quarters. Doors were locked. Interactions were monitored.
Everything, the parents claimed, was done to prevent any situation where children could be alone together.
Jim Bob Duggar described the situation involving Josh as “very difficult,” downplaying the incidents as inappropriate touching that occurred while the victims were asleep.
The couple also faced backlash over their decision not to immediately report Josh’s behavior to authorities.
Jim Bob defended the choice, arguing parents are not always legally required to report such incidents.
“As parents, you do what you think is best for your child,” he said, adding that removing Josh from the home was the right move.
He claimed Josh later apologized to those involved.
Michelle, however, sparked further controversy by suggesting the victims may not have fully understood what had happened at the time.
“They probably didn’t even realize it was improper,” she said.
The resurfaced interview is now taking on new weight as another Duggar brother, Joseph Duggar, faces serious allegations involving a young child.
According to an affidavit, Joseph is accused of inappropriate behavior involving a 9-year-old girl during a 2020 family trip.
Investigators allege he repeatedly asked the child to sit on his lap and escalated physical contact over time.
He and his wife are also facing additional charges tied to the welfare of a minor.
For critics, the resurfaced comments raise uncomfortable questions about whether warning signs were there all along.
What once sounded like strict parenting now feels, to many, like a system built in response to something far more troubling behind closed doors.
And with new allegations surfacing, the Duggar name is once again at the center of a scandal that refuses to fade.
