A highly anticipated season of The Bachelorette has been abruptly scrapped, sending shockwaves through reality TV and raising serious questions about how far networks will go to chase ratings.

ABC’s parent company, Disney, confirmed Thursday that production has been halted indefinitely after a disturbing video involving the show’s lead, Taylor Frankie Paul, surfaced online.

“In light of the newly released video that surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time,” Disney said in a statement. “Our focus is on supporting the family.”

The move comes just as buzz around the new season was building—and just days after controversy surrounding Paul reached a boiling point.

The tipping point appears to be a video first reported by TMZ. The footage allegedly shows Paul throwing furniture during a heated confrontation with her then-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen, in 2023. A child was reportedly present during the incident.

Authorities in Draper, Utah, have confirmed an ongoing domestic assault investigation involving both Paul and Mortensen. Police say allegations have been made “in both directions,” though details remain limited.

“Contact was made with involved parties on February 24th and 25th,” a police spokesperson said. “The investigation is active.”

The resurfaced footage intensified scrutiny almost instantly—and corporate partners didn’t wait long to react.

Cinnabon became one of the first brands to cut ties, announcing it would terminate its partnership tied to both The Bachelorette and Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, where Paul also stars.

“Recent developments and allegations surrounding the lead cast member led us to reassess this collaboration,” the company said. “It no longer aligns with our brand values.”

Behind the scenes, insiders say pressure was building rapidly on ABC executives to act.

One industry analyst described the situation as a “public relations nightmare.”

“They were trying to reinvent the franchise with a more controversial lead,” said podcast host and former crisis communications expert Kate Casey. “But this crossed a line. There’s no coming back from footage like that.”

Paul is no stranger to headlines.

She first rose to fame through the viral “MomTok” influencer circle and later became a breakout personality on Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Her name made national news in 2022 after she revealed involvement in a “soft swinging” lifestyle that reportedly contributed to multiple divorces within her friend group.

“No one is innocent,” Paul said at the time during a livestream. “Everyone has hooked up with everyone in this situation.”

The controversy turned her into a polarizing figure—one ABC appeared willing to gamble on.

That gamble has now collapsed.

The current investigation is not Paul’s first brush with the law.

She was arrested in 2023 and charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child. She later pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge. Other counts were dismissed.

Now, critics are questioning why she was cast in the first place.

In a recent interview, Paul acknowledged the growing storm around her but stopped short of addressing the specific allegations.

“It’s been a heavy time to see the headlines,” she said. “My kids come first. I’m just trying to stay present and focus on them right now.”

Her spokesperson pushed back more forcefully, claiming Paul has been the victim of abuse.

“After years of silently suffering mental and physical abuse, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser,” the statement read. “There are too many women suffering in silence.”

The spokesperson added that Paul is preparing to share her side of the story publicly.

The fallout has spread beyond The Bachelorette.

Production on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has also been paused. Cast member Mikayla Matthews confirmed the decision came from within the group.

“We didn’t feel comfortable filming with everything that was happening,” she wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, ABC has yet to announce what will replace The Bachelorette in its lineup—or whether the franchise will recover.

For now, the future of the long-running dating show remains uncertain.

What is clear: a franchise built on fairy-tale romance has been derailed by real-world chaos.

And in today’s media climate, even reality TV can’t outpace reality itself.
