A frightening moment unfolded during Thursday night’s NBA matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and the Brooklyn Nets when a female referee was left reeling after crashing into a courtside cameraman while chasing a fast break.
Veteran NBA official Sha’Rae Mitchell was sprinting along the sideline to keep up with the action when she collided head-on with a television camera operator stationed just inches from the court. The violent impact sent Mitchell flying backward and crashing onto the hardwood.
Video from the game shows Mitchell focused on the developing play and seemingly unaware of the cameraman directly in her path until it was too late.

The collision appeared to rattle the referee immediately. Mitchell grabbed her head and remained down for a brief moment as players, coaches, and fellow officials looked on with concern.
Arena cameras captured the stunned official slowly getting back to her feet, clearly shaken by the blow.
“It happened incredibly fast,” one witness seated courtside said after the game. “She was sprinting to follow the play and just ran straight into the camera setup. The sound of the collision was loud enough for people nearby to gasp.”
The cameraman remained in his assigned position along the baseline during the sequence, a standard location used by television crews to capture close-up footage of fast breaks and drives to the basket.
Despite appearing frustrated after the incident, Mitchell refused to leave the game.
She briefly spoke with another referee about the collision and then returned to her position, finishing the remainder of the contest.
Courtside camera positions have long been part of NBA broadcasts, but they have occasionally caused dangerous moments when officials or players run full speed toward the baseline.
Mitchell’s decision to stay in the game drew praise from some observers, who noted the toughness required to continue officiating after such a jarring hit.
“She took a pretty serious knock and still stayed out there,” another spectator said. “That’s not easy when your head just slammed into a full broadcast rig.”
The frightening moment came during an intense stretch of play as Atlanta attempted to extend its red-hot winning streak.
On the court, the Hawks ultimately pulled away from the Nets with a strong fourth-quarter surge.
Atlanta star Jalen Johnson led the charge with an all-around performance, posting 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists—just one assist shy of a triple-double.
Rookie Zaccharie Risacher added 19 points off the bench to help fuel the Hawks’ offense.
Brooklyn briefly grabbed momentum early in the fourth quarter when it took an 83-82 lead, but the Hawks quickly responded with a decisive 10-0 run that shifted the game for good.
The Nets fought to stay close behind a career-best performance from Josh Minott, who poured in 24 points in the losing effort.
But Atlanta held firm down the stretch, securing a 108-97 victory and pushing its winning streak to eight games—one of the longest currently active runs in the league.
Meanwhile, the viral moment involving Mitchell quickly spread online, with fans reacting to the shocking collision and praising the referee for finishing the game after the scary impact.
