Rose Byrne is known for her sharp wit and emotional depth on screen. But her latest off-the-cuff confession has some fans doing a double take.

The Australian actress, 46, raised eyebrows after joking that she “drinks a lot of alcohol” to unwind following intense days on set. The comment came as she promoted her new psychological comedy-drama, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, where she plays Linda, a mother spiraling through an existential crisis.

“I drink a lot of alcohol,” Byrne said candidly. “To be honest, it’s sometimes as simple as having a cocktail after a long day on set or switching on the TV.”

She added that everyone has different coping mechanisms — noting that while some turn to religion or spiritual practices, she doesn’t. Instead, she leans on simple routines at home in Brooklyn with longtime partner Bobby Cannavale and their two sons.

Byrne has never shied away from emotionally demanding material. Insiders say she fully immerses herself in her characters — and that can come at a cost.

One source close to the production told us her remarks were meant to be self-deprecating, not alarming.

“Rose was being honest about how intense the work can be,” the insider said. “She draws a firm line between work and home. The alcohol comment wasn’t a cry for help — it was her way of describing how she switches off.”

Another source familiar with Byrne’s routine insisted there’s no indication she’s struggling with addiction.

“There’s no sense she’s out of control,” the source said. “Actors talk about grabbing a drink the way others talk about yoga or a bath. She has a stable family life and strong support system.”

Still, the timing of the comment has sparked conversation. Hollywood has been under a microscope in recent years when it comes to mental health and substance use. Even a casual joke can take on a bigger meaning in today’s climate.

Byrne and Cannavale have built what friends describe as a low-key life in Brooklyn. Far from the Hollywood party circuit, the couple relies on a tight-knit community and family ties.

She recently emphasized how carefully she separates her professional life from her personal one.

“I’m very good at keeping work at work and keeping home at home,” Byrne said. “My children couldn’t care less if I’ve had a long day — and that’s the most refreshing, grounding thing.”

The themes of If I Had Legs I’d Kick You hit especially close to home. Byrne admitted that playing a struggling mother felt personal.

“There’s nothing more confronting than being a parent,” she said. “Kids see the best of you and the worst of you. They teach you more about yourself than anything.”

In the film, she stars opposite Conan O’Brien, who plays her therapist, alongside A$AP Rocky, Christian Slater, and Danielle Macdonald. The movie was written and directed by Mary Bronstein and dives deep into identity, anxiety, and modern parenthood.

So was Byrne’s booze comment just classic dry humor — or an unfiltered glimpse into the pressures of leading-lady life?

For now, sources close to the star insist it’s the former. But in an industry where every word is dissected, even a playful confession can quickly turn into headline fuel.
