A brutal stabbing inside a Minnesota apartment has shattered a Republican governor’s race and plunged a prominent GOP family into mourning.

Hallie Marie Tobler, the 22-year-old daughter of Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson, was found stabbed to death inside her locked St. Cloud apartment Saturday night, authorities confirmed.

Police say the killing appears to stem from a failed murder-suicide.

Officers with the St. Cloud Police Department were dispatched to the residence after a medical emergency call. When they entered the apartment, they found Hallie dead from multiple stab wounds. There were no signs of forced entry.

Her husband, 23-year-old Dylan Michael Tobler, was also found inside the apartment suffering from what investigators believe were self-inflicted stab wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

By Sunday, police said Dylan’s condition had stabilized. He has since been taken into custody and is expected to be formally charged with homicide once he is released from medical care.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” police said in a statement. “Based on the evidence collected so far, investigators believe this was a domestic incident that escalated into fatal violence.”

The killing sent shockwaves through Minnesota’s Republican Party and immediately upended the state’s 2026 gubernatorial race.

Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud city councilman and longtime conservative activist, announced he is suspending his campaign following what party officials called an “unimaginable loss.”

“There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family,” the Minnesota Republican Party said Monday. “The loss of a child is beyond comprehension, and our hearts are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy.”

The party added that Johnson’s decision was made “out of respect for his family and the enormity of this loss,” urging Minnesotans to keep the family in their prayers.

Johnson launched his bid for governor in early 2025, running on a platform aligned with President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda. He focused heavily on law and order, border enforcement, and election integrity.

His campaign frequently cited rising violent crime across Minnesota, which has seen increased federal law enforcement activity and protests tied to immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.

That message now stands in painful contrast to the personal tragedy engulfing his family.

Friends and relatives described Hallie as bright, kind, and full of promise. Photos shared online show her smiling at graduation celebrations and family gatherings just months before her death.

“She had her whole life ahead of her,” one family acquaintance wrote. “This is a nightmare no parent should ever face.”

With Johnson stepping aside, the Republican primary field remains crowded. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth is widely viewed as the current GOP front-runner. She is followed by Army veteran and businessman Kendall Qualls and MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, according to local station KSTP.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is running unopposed for the governor’s mansion after Gov. Tim Walz suspended his campaign last month.

As investigators continue piecing together what led up to the killing, authorities stressed that domestic violence remains a persistent and deadly threat across the country.
