Four Buddhist monks in Thailand have been stripped of their robes and arrested after authorities say they uncovered a shocking cache of illegal drugs, pornography, sex devices, and an alleged list of local escorts inside a working temple.

The raid has stunned a nation where Buddhism is deeply woven into daily life — and where monks are expected to live by some of the strictest religious rules on earth.

Police moved in last week after villagers raised alarms about suspicious behavior at Phrom Sunthon Monastery, located in eastern Thailand.

What officers say they found inside shattered the image of sacred calm.

According to officials, the search uncovered cash, a firearm, drug paraphernalia, explicit media, and sexual enhancement devices — items considered strictly forbidden under Buddhist monastic law.

Three of the monks allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine.

All four were arrested on the spot.

A Temple Raid That Shocked Locals

Authorities say the investigation began after residents in Chonburi Province complained about suspected drug use and weapons on temple grounds.

Police say the raid uncovered roughly $2,800 in cash, a gun, a DVD player containing pornographic material, a penis enlargement pump, and a handwritten list believed to include names of local sex workers.

The monks arrested were identified as Phra Supachai Jantawong, 35; Phra Wirat Mukdasanit, 45; Phra Thanapol Maison, 59; and the temple’s abbot, Phra Photisang Taebmuan.

All four were immediately defrocked — formally expelled from the monkhood — and barred from returning to religious life.

In Buddhist tradition, defrocking is a severe punishment, reserved for serious violations such as drug use, sexual activity, or criminal behavior.

“It Was for Pain,” One Monk Claims

One of the monks attempted to downplay the allegations, insisting his drug use was purely medical.

“I’ve been taking it to manage body pain from diabetes and high blood pressure,” the monk told officials. “When the pain is really bad, I take these kinds of pills.”

He added, “It’s for relieving nerve pain. I only use it when the pain becomes severe.”

Authorities were unconvinced.

Colonel Saksilp Kamnoedsin of Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command said the monks would face further consequences beyond defrocking.

“The three monks found to be using drugs will be transferred to police and relevant agencies for rehabilitation,” he said. “The abbot will be questioned by police and then deported to his country of origin.”

A Growing Crisis for Thai Buddhism

Thailand is overwhelmingly Buddhist, with more than 90 percent of the population identifying with the faith and an estimated 45,000 temples across the country.

Monks are expected to follow strict vows, including celibacy, sobriety, and detachment from money and material possessions.

But scandals like this have become increasingly hard to ignore.

Just two years ago, another monk was arrested after authorities say they found drugs, condoms, Viagra, and a penis pump in his home.

That monk claimed the condoms were used as plant containers and that the sexual devices were for medical treatment.

He was also defrocked and sent to drug rehabilitation.

Local residents in that case said the monk’s behavior had frightened worshippers and disrupted religious services — especially those attended by children.

Trust Broken at the Temple Gates

For many Buddhists, temples are places of refuge, discipline, and spiritual clarity.

Cases like this cut deep.

“This damages public faith,” one local resident told Thai media following the raid. “People come to temples seeking peace. They don’t expect drugs and weapons.”

As investigations continue, religious authorities say they are reviewing oversight procedures to prevent similar scandals in the future.

For now, the once-sacred temple stands as a symbol of broken vows — and a reminder that even holy ground is not immune to human failure.
