President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through Europe after firing off an explosive letter to Norway’s prime minister, furious that he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. At 79, Trump appears more fixated than ever on the prize he’s chased for years — and this time, he tied his resentment to U.S. foreign policy.
“Since your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote, stunning diplomats across NATO. One EU official called the message “dangerous and unhinged.”
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre reminded Trump, again, that Norway’s government does not select the Nobel winner. But the correction did little to calm the president.
Trump also revived his obsession with taking control of Greenland, claiming Denmark has no “right of ownership” and declaring, “The world is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland.” The remark sparked protests in Nuuk, where residents called Trump’s comments “delusional” and “threatening.”
His meltdown follows last week’s surreal moment in the Oval Office, where Venezuelan dissident María Corina Machado — the actual Nobel laureate — handed Trump her medal during a choreographed visit. The Nobel Committee immediately rejected the stunt, saying the award is inseparable from the winner.
European leaders, already bracing for Trump’s new tariff threats, now fear his personal vendettas are driving U.S. policy. A senior diplomat put it bluntly: “If he’s this angry over a prize, imagine his reaction to an actual crisis.”
