President Donald Trump erupted into what insiders describe as a “full-blown meltdown” during a phone call with Sen. Susan Collins, berating the moderate Republican after she voted to restrain his push toward expanded military action in Venezuela.
According to multiple sources, the president blindsided Collins with a profanity-laced tirade Thursday evening, furious that she helped Democrats advance a War Powers resolution limiting his authority to deepen U.S. involvement in the region.
“He wasn’t just mad. He was screaming,” said one senior GOP aide who was briefed on the call. “The president was ranting about betrayal, about power, about ‘taking Venezuela’s oil while we still can.’ It was unhinged.”
Another source put it bluntly: “He was out for blood.”
Collins joined four other Republican senators — Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, Josh Hawley, and Todd Young — in a dramatic break from Trump, giving Democrats the numbers they needed for the 52–47 vote. The resolution is aimed squarely at Trump’s attempts to expand military operations following the U.S. capture of Nicolás Maduro last year.
The administration has insisted the operation was a “liberation.” Critics call it an oil grab wrapped in patriotic branding.
Trump, sources say, accused Collins of “crippling America’s global dominance” and warned she would “regret this vote for the rest of her career.”
“He basically read her the riot act,” one official said. “Except louder. And with more swear words.”
Maduro’s capture created political chaos abroad and at home. Trump has openly floated the idea of the U.S. “running Venezuela’s oil output for stability,” a claim that stunned foreign policy experts and angered both Democrats and traditional Republicans.
On Friday, Trump met privately with oil executives from Chevron, Exxon, and Halliburton about Venezuela’s infrastructure. Several participants said the meeting veered into bizarre territory.
“He suddenly switched topics and spent five minutes describing the new ballroom he’s building in the White House,” said one attendee. “No one understood what was happening.”
When reporters caught Collins after the vote, she did not deny the explosive call.
“The president clearly had strong feelings,” she said. “But my vote wasn’t about him. It was about preventing another open-ended conflict.”
When asked whether Trump might try to tank her reelection bid, Collins gave a tight smile.
“If he prefers a Democrat take this seat, he’s welcome to try,” she said.
Her race is already one of the most watched contests of the year, and Democrats are thrilled with the political gift.
Hours after the phone call, Trump detonated publicly.
“The Republican Senators who voted with Democrats today DISGRACED OUR COUNTRY,” he wrote. “They should NEVER hold office again.”
One longtime Trump adviser said the president is “obsessed” with punishing the five Republicans who crossed him.
“He’s tracking them like enemies,” the adviser said. “He’s convinced they’re sabotaging his vision of American power. And he’s not done.”
The War Powers showdown has ignited a new round of internal GOP warfare. Trump loyalists blame Collins and the other defectors for undermining him at a “historic moment of American dominance.” Traditional Republicans accuse Trump of playing dictator.
Sen. Chris Murphy didn’t mince words.
“This is what happens when a president treats foreign policy like a reality show,” Murphy said. “Even Republicans are trying to stop him before he drags America into a crisis we can’t control.”
The full Senate vote is expected next week. If the resolution passes, it will be one of the strongest congressional checks on Trump’s wartime authority since he returned to office.
And based on the volcanic phone call that started it all, Trump is bracing for war — not just abroad, but inside his own party.
