Whoopi Goldberg erupted in anger Monday after President Donald Trump turned the shocking murder of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, into what she called “a disgusting self-promotion.”
The longtime host of The View — who worked with Reiner on the 1996 civil-rights drama Ghosts of Mississippi — condemned Trump’s Truth Social post, calling it “cruel, tone-deaf, and shameful.”
“I don’t understand the man in that White House,” Goldberg said during the live broadcast. “He talks about caring and compassion — then he does this. Have you no shame? None at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”
Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 68, were found dead Sunday night inside their Beverly Hills home. Law enforcement sources told People the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, is in custody after allegedly stabbing both parents during a violent domestic dispute. Their daughter, Romy, 28, discovered the bodies.
In a statement shared through the family’s spokesperson, relatives described the loss as “unimaginable.”
“We are heartbroken and ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement read.
Hours later, President Trump posted on Truth Social, writing that the director had “suffered from TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME,” and suggested his “massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction” had somehow “caused anger” that led to his death.
The remark sparked immediate outrage online — even among some Republican commentators — with critics calling it “sick,” “inhuman,” and “beyond politics.”
Reiner, an outspoken liberal who directed When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men, had often clashed with Trump over the years. But on The View, Goldberg and her co-hosts said this moment demanded empathy, not score-settling.
When Sunny Hostin tried to read the president’s post aloud, Goldberg stopped her: “Don’t read it,” she said sharply. “We’re not giving that filth oxygen.”
Fellow co-host Ana Navarro added, “There’s an American family grieving. This isn’t about politics. For the president of the United States to make this about himself — to attack a man who was just murdered — it’s disgraceful.”
Rob Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, was one of Hollywood’s most successful writer-directors, known for his wit, activism, and decades-long marriage to Michele. He appeared on The View multiple times over the years and was remembered Monday by Goldberg as “an amazing man who believed in doing good.”
Goldberg ended the segment visibly shaken.
“You ain’t my president, man,” she said, addressing Trump. “Our hearts are breaking — through Rob, through all of it. And you can’t even say, ‘We hate what’s happening’? Shame.”
