Obamas Planned to Meet Reiners on Night They Were Killed

The shocking murder of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, has taken a deeply personal turn — former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed she and her husband, Barack Obama, were supposed to meet the couple the very night they were killed.

Speaking emotionally on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night, Michelle Obama said the Reiners had been close friends for decades, describing them as “some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.”

“My God,” she told Kimmel. “We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night — last night. And we got the news.”

The former first lady’s voice trembled as she reflected on the loss. “Unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know. They’re not deranged or crazed — they’ve always been passionate, especially in a time when courage is rare.”

Rob Reiner, 78, the acclaimed director of When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men, and his wife Michele, 68, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home Sunday morning. Their son, 36-year-old Nick Reiner, was taken into custody and charged with their murders.

Authorities say Nick had been involved in a heated argument with his parents the night before. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department confirmed he is being held without bail after an initial $4 million bond was revoked.

A private security guard now stands watch outside the couple’s upscale property as stunned neighbors and fans leave flowers and handwritten notes along the sidewalk.

Michelle Obama told Kimmel that the Reiners weren’t just Hollywood power players — they were humanitarians with a moral compass.

“They cared about their family, they cared about this country, and they cared about fairness and equity,” she said. “That is the truth. I do know them.”

Earlier Tuesday, Barack Obama released a statement through his office, calling the couple’s deaths “heartbreaking.”

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories,” the former president wrote. “But beneath it all was a deep belief in the goodness of people — and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and Michele lived with purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired.”

Nick Reiner, a screenwriter and actor, has long struggled with mental health and addiction issues. In his 2015 memoir Being Charlie — co-written with his father — he detailed his battles with substance abuse and his complicated relationship with his parents.

Criminal defense attorney David Gelman told Fox News that Nick’s legal team may pursue an insanity defense, citing a history of psychiatric treatment. “If he was in a delusional or psychotic state, that will absolutely be central to his case,” Gelman said.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. Actors Rob Lowe and Sally Field both expressed devastation on social media, with Field writing: “Rob and Michele were a force for good. I can’t believe this is real.”

For the Obamas, the tragedy is personal — a meeting that never happened, and a friendship cut short by unthinkable violence.

“They were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about,” Michelle Obama said quietly. “And now, all we can do is honor that.”
