The White House is in meltdown mode again. Multiple insiders say President Donald Trump is “furious” and “personally embarrassed” as rumors swirl that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been caught up in a secret romantic relationship with Trump’s longtime ally and strategist Corey Lewandowski.

According to two former DHS officials who still speak with current staff, tensions inside the department have “boiled over.” One described the scene as “chaos,” adding, “They’re going to destroy this place. People are terrified, angry — and waiting for the hammer to fall.” Sources say Trump has been briefed on the situation and is seriously considering firing Noem “as soon as January.”

The alleged relationship has become Washington’s latest obsession. Lewandowski, 52, has worked on and off with Trump since his 2016 campaign, but his return to government life as Noem’s unofficial chief of staff raised eyebrows. The married father of four has reportedly been “inseparable” from Noem, 54, traveling with her on official trips and joining classified briefings — behavior that some DHS officials have called “highly irregular.”

“It’s the worst-kept secret in Washington,” said one staffer. “Everyone’s talking about it, and Trump’s had enough.” Both Noem and Lewandowski are married — she since 1992, he since 2005 — and both have publicly denied the affair. Still, sources say the rumors are “out of control” and that Trump believes the distraction is undermining his administration’s credibility.

Adding fuel to the fire, Noem’s tenure at DHS has already been rocked by a series of embarrassing missteps. In November, internal investigators revealed she had approved a $100 million order for ten Spirit Airlines jets — without realizing the planes had no engines. “It was one of the dumbest procurement moves in agency history,” a DHS insider told Axios. “She was warned. She ignored everyone.”

Lewandowski was reportedly behind several of Noem’s more controversial moves, including a plan to replace ICE leadership with former Border Patrol officials seen as “hardline Trump loyalists.” Critics say the strategy could have “militarized” immigration enforcement in cities nationwide.

Now, Trump’s closest advisors are pushing for a clean break. Multiple sources told The Bulwark and RadarOnline that outgoing Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Noem — a move that could come “within weeks.” One senior aide said bluntly, “Trump’s patience is gone. He thinks she’s lost control of DHS — and maybe herself.”

Noem, for her part, appears to be trying to brush it all off. During a December 8 event at Tampa International Airport, she laughed nervously when asked about her job security. “I don’t have any indication of that,” she said. “The president is fantastic, and I’m proud every single day to work for him.”

But behind the scenes, aides say she’s rattled. “She’s walking on eggshells,” one insider said. “The walls are closing in.”

Democrats have seized on the latest turmoil, blasting the Trump administration for “turning national security into a soap opera.” Representative Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) didn’t mince words: “We’ve got a DHS secretary buying planes without engines and an advisor who can’t keep his hands off her. This isn’t leadership — it’s chaos.”

Ethics watchdogs are now calling for an investigation into whether Noem and Lewandowski’s alleged relationship violated federal conduct or security policies. “If personal entanglements are influencing decisions at the Department of Homeland Security, that’s a national risk,” said Elaine Gerson, head of the government accountability group Citizens for Integrity.

The Noem-Lewandowski saga marks yet another scandal for Trump’s second term, now defined as much by personal drama as political agenda. Even Republican strategists close to the president admit the optics are brutal. “Trump thrives on loyalty and chaos,” one longtime operative said. “But this time, the chaos is eating him alive.”
