America’s far-right echo chamber went into full meltdown mode Friday after Netflix’s stunning $82.7 billion bid to acquire Warner Bros. — a move that could reshape the entertainment industry for a generation.
But for MAGA influencers, it was something else entirely: proof, they claim, that Barack and Michelle Obama are plotting a media takeover.
“This is about Obama taking over media,” tweeted pro-Trump agitator Jack Posobiec, reviving the same conspiratorial energy that fueled the Pizzagate hoax.
He wasn’t alone. Far-right commentator Laura Loomer fumed that the deal would give the Obamas “a cultural reach unmatched by any political family in modern history.”
Never mind that the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground, has had a content deal with Netflix since 2018 — one that produced critically acclaimed films and documentaries such as American Factory and Becoming. Loomer and others now insist that this acquisition will create an “Obama News Network,” even though CNN isn’t even part of the purchase.
Netflix’s deal covers HBO Max and Warner Bros. film and TV assets, but not CNN, which is slated to spin off into a separate entity called Discovery Global sometime next year.
Industry analysts say the move is Netflix’s most aggressive attempt yet to expand beyond streaming into full-scale content ownership. “It’s not about politics — it’s about survival,” said Shawn Robbins, a film analyst at Box Office Theory. “Netflix is trying to stay dominant in a world where Disney and Amazon are catching up.”
Still, MAGA world is treating it like a national security emergency.
Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who briefly served as Trump’s acting attorney general before resigning under ethics scrutiny, demanded the Justice Department intervene.
“TRUMP MUST STOP THIS!” Gaetz posted on X. “This is an anti-trust violation and deeply harmful to the marketplace. A woke media monopoly is forming before our eyes.”
But Gaetz’s call for government intervention comes as the Trump administration’s own DOJ, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, weighs whether to challenge the acquisition on antitrust grounds.
“Any merger of this size gets intense scrutiny,” said one Justice Department official who spoke on background. “But the president’s tweets won’t decide this case.”
Interestingly, opposition to the merger isn’t limited to the far right. Several Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, also raised alarms — but for very different reasons.
“This deal looks like an anti-monopoly nightmare,” Warren warned on X. “A Netflix-Warner Bros. merger could push up prices, crush competition, and cost workers their jobs.”
Republican Sen. Mike Lee echoed some of those concerns, calling the transaction “the biggest competition question I’ve seen in a decade.”
Even industry veterans worry that the deal could hurt theaters, since Netflix typically limits big-screen releases. “It’s no secret this was the least desired outcome for many theater owners,” said Robbins. “Netflix plays by its own rules.”
Meanwhile, right-wing pages like “End Wokeness” — which boasts nearly 4 million followers — are spreading memes showing Black actors Photoshopped into white movie roles, claiming this is “the future under the Obamas.”
It’s the same racial panic MAGA media has leaned on for years, only now dressed up in Hollywood packaging.
“Conservatives are projecting their fear of losing control over the cultural narrative,” said Dr. Maya Hernandez, a media studies professor at UCLA. “What they call ‘Obama’s takeover’ is really the normalization of diverse storytelling.”
For now, the Netflix–Warner Bros. deal isn’t final. Regulators will spend months — possibly years — assessing whether it violates antitrust law. But inside MAGA circles, that hardly matters.
“Obama’s fingerprints are all over this,” Posobiec ranted again Friday night. “They’re trying to brainwash America through Netflix.”
And yet, while Trump supporters rage online, the rest of Hollywood is celebrating a historic consolidation that could reshape entertainment — and perhaps remind America that culture wars don’t pay the bills.
As one Netflix executive quipped to Variety, “They can call it the Obama Network all they want. We just call it business.”
