President Donald Trump kicked off Friday with a fiery social media post, claiming Democrats are plotting to “obliterate” the Supreme Court if they win next year’s elections.
The 79-year-old former president warned his followers that Democrats’ top priority would be ending the filibuster to expand the Court to 21 justices—a claim with zero evidence backing it.
“The Democrats’ number one policy push is the complete and total OBLITERATION of our great United States Supreme Court,” Trump wrote. “They will do this on their very first day in office, through the simple Termination of the Filibuster, SHOULD THEY WIN THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS.”
Trump has repeatedly pushed Republicans to kill the filibuster themselves, warning it’s the only way to stop Democrats from gaining control in the future. GOP senators have resisted, noting that removing the 60-vote requirement could backfire if Democrats ever regain a Senate majority.
Trump’s post escalated his usual rhetoric, warning that Democrats want “21 Justices, with immediate ascension.” He added, “This would be terrible for our Country. Fear not, however, Republicans will not let it, or any of their other catastrophic policies, happen. Our Country is now in very good hands.”
While some progressive Democrats have floated the idea of expanding the Court, there’s been little movement on the issue, as many Democrats remain hesitant. Still, Trump has used it to stoke fear among his base.
His Friday post came on the heels of a Supreme Court decision allowing Texas to use Republican-drawn congressional maps for the upcoming election—a ruling that Democrats slammed as a GOP power grab. The decision could give Republicans an edge in retaining the House next year, though blue states like California are racing to respond with their own redistricting efforts.
Trump’s latest post underscores his ongoing strategy: painting Democrats as radicals trying to upend the judiciary while positioning himself as the only safeguard against it.
