Federal officials are begging a Trump-appointed judge to jail Taylor Taranto, a pardoned January 6 rioter accused of lurking outside the home of Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin — just months after Donald Trump set him free.
Taranto, who was once arrested with a van full of guns and explosives near Barack Obama’s home, is now at the center of a political firestorm that Democrats say exposes the deadly consequences of Trump’s mass pardons.
“This man should never have been free — and certainly not anywhere near a member of Congress,” a senior Capitol Police officer told Politico. “We got lucky this time.”
Taranto, 37, became infamous in 2023 after federal agents discovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, and bomb-making materials in his van parked near Obama’s D.C. residence. He served two years in pretrial detention before being released under supervision.
In April 2025, President Trump pardoned him, calling January 6 defendants “political prisoners” and promising to “correct the injustices” of their cases.
Now, the same man Trump called a “patriot” has been spotted outside the home of one of Trump’s fiercest critics.
Authorities say Taranto was seen prowling around Raskin’s Takoma Park neighborhood on Tuesday morning, triggering an immediate law enforcement response. Raskin’s security was rapidly boosted, and the congressman was escorted home by Capitol Police.
A Democratic aide who spoke to Axios described the scene as “terrifying,” adding: “Jamie knew his name immediately. He’s been on the radar for years — and for him to show up at Jamie’s house? That’s not random.”
Prosecutors rushed to ask U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, appointed by Trump in 2019, to revoke Taranto’s release and send him back to jail.
“This is a man who drove cross-country with weapons, who’s already shown a pattern of violence and obsession,” said one Justice Department source. “The only reason he’s free is because of Donald Trump.”
Despite the warnings, Judge Nichols refused to immediately jail Taranto, instead ordering him to return to Washington state by noon Friday and banning him from D.C. until next year. Nichols said he was “absolutely prepared” to incarcerate Taranto if he violates the order — but Democrats say the time to act is now.
“Waiting weeks could be deadly,” one law enforcement source told The Daily Beast. “We’ve seen what happens when you underestimate these people.”
Taranto’s lawyer, Carmen Hernández, insisted her client wasn’t “targeting” anyone, dismissing reports as “political hysteria.”
The encounter comes in a year already scarred by bloodshed and political extremism — including the assassination attempt on President Trump, the June murder of Minnesota Democrat Melissa Hortman, and the September killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Analysts warn that Trump’s blanket pardons have reopened old wounds and rekindled extremist networks that went underground after Jan. 6.
“Every time one of these men reappears, it’s another reminder of how fragile this country’s peace really is,” said former FBI agent Frank Figliuzzi. “The difference now is they feel untouchable — because the president himself rewarded them.”
Rep. Raskin, 62, has endured more than most lawmakers — losing his son to suicide in 2020, surviving the Jan. 6 insurrection firsthand, and becoming a constant target of far-right attacks.
“Jamie’s strength is inspiring,” said a Democratic colleague. “But how many times can one man look over his shoulder?”
As he left the Capitol Wednesday night, Raskin reportedly told colleagues he would not “live in fear,” though those around him say the threat felt different this time.
The White House has not commented on the case, but senior Democrats privately fumed that Trump’s decision to pardon Taranto may have put lives at risk.
“When you call terrorists patriots, this is what happens,” one House Democrat said bluntly. “Trump let him out — and now look where he showed up.”
For now, Taranto remains free — but the fear he’s stirred in Washington lingers.
As one Capitol Police officer put it:
“Next time, we might not get there in time.”

Decide if laws matter all the time or when convenient for you.
