A quiet Southern California neighborhood was shaken by violence after a husband and wife were fatally shot outside their Simi Valley home in what police believe was a targeted attack.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire on Nov. 30, arriving to find the couple lying in their driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. They were rushed to the hospital but did not survive, according to KTLA.
The victims were identified as Dr. Eric Cordes, a well-known radiologist, and his wife, Vicki. Adventist Health Simi Valley, where Cordes worked for nearly three decades, released an emotional statement mourning the loss of the respected physician. The hospital described him as a compassionate doctor who served the community with exceptional care.
Cordes also practiced at Focus Medical Imaging, according to the facility’s website.
Authorities say a black sedan was spotted speeding away from the couple’s home shortly after the shooting. Later that afternoon, police in Chino discovered a burning black sedan with a deceased person lying nearby, along with a firearm. Investigators believe the two incidents are connected, though final confirmation will depend on the coroner’s findings. The individual found near the vehicle has not been identified, and police are investigating the death as a possible suicide.
Neighbors told KABC they speculated the shooter might have been a stepson of one of the victims, though police have not verified that information. Simi Valley police Sgt. Rick Morton did confirm, however, that investigators believe the couple was targeted.
As the investigation continues, the community is left struggling to make sense of a tragedy that unfolded on an otherwise ordinary evening.
