A dream vacation has turned into a heartbreaking mystery after a 76-year-old British man reportedly fell overboard from a luxury cruise ship near Spain’s Canary Islands.
The incident happened early Thursday morning as the Marella Explorer 2 made its way toward La Gomera. The ship had departed from Tenerife on November 21 for a week-long island cruise when passengers reportedly saw the man enter the water.
Marella Cruises released a somber statement following the incident: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a guest was seen entering the water while the ship was on passage to La Gomera. Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time.”
The company added that its care team is “supporting the family, providing assistance and comfort,” and that they are “working closely with local authorities” as search and rescue teams — including helicopters and patrol boats — scour the waters.
As of Friday evening, Spanish authorities confirmed that the man remained missing, despite extensive efforts to locate him.
The tragic disappearance has left fellow passengers and crew members shaken, with many sharing their disbelief on social media as the cruise continued its route under heavy emotional strain.
