Sir Richard Branson is mourning the loss of his wife, Joan Templeman — his partner in life, love, and adventure for nearly half a century.

In an emotional Instagram post shared Tuesday, the 75-year-old Virgin Group founder wrote, “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away. She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for. She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan.”

A Love Story Born in Music

Branson first met Templeman in 1976 at The Manor, a sprawling Oxfordshire estate that served as Virgin Records’ legendary residential studio. The Scottish-born Templeman was then working in London, and Branson — already a rising music mogul — admitted he was instantly captivated.

“I often make up my mind about someone within 30 seconds of meeting them, and I fell for Joan almost from the moment I saw her,” Branson recalled in a 2020 blog post.

Their romance blossomed during a time when Branson was building his Virgin empire — from record labels to airlines — and Templeman quickly became his emotional anchor.

A Marriage on a Private Island

After 13 years together, the couple married in 1989 on Branson’s private Caribbean paradise, Necker Island, which he had purchased nearly a decade earlier for $180,000. The intimate ceremony was attended by close family and friends, reflecting the couple’s famously down-to-earth relationship despite their global fame.

They shared three children: Holly, now 44, a doctor and business leader; Sam, 40, a filmmaker and environmental activist; and Clare Sarah, their first child, who tragically died at just four days old.

The Heart of the Branson Family

Known for her warmth, humor, and fierce loyalty, Templeman was often described by family friends as “the quiet strength” behind the Virgin empire. While Branson became a household name for his daredevil spirit — from crossing oceans in balloons to launching Virgin Galactic into space — Joan remained his steady compass.

“She never wanted the spotlight,” a family friend once said in an interview with The Telegraph. “But she kept Richard grounded — she was the one person who could tell him to slow down, and he would actually listen.”

A Private Goodbye

Branson did not disclose Templeman’s cause of death. Those close to the couple say she had been in fragile health in recent years, spending more time at the family’s homes in the British Virgin Islands and Oxfordshire.

As messages of condolence poured in from around the world, Branson’s post was flooded with comments from fans, colleagues, and celebrities who praised the couple’s enduring love story.

“Richard and Joan were a team in every sense,” one longtime Virgin executive commented. “He’s lost the love of his life.”

For now, Branson says he’s focusing on his children and grandchildren — and cherishing the half-century of memories he shared with his beloved wife.

“She was my world,” he wrote simply. “And always will be.”
