According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Mary Jolly and her wife were driving along Interstate 95 in Brevard County early on Saturday, Nov. 15, when they came across a man who had been hurt in an earlier accident, NBC affiliate WESH reports.
Jolly reportedly got out of her car to assist the injured motorist. While standing in the center lane, she was struck by a Nissan Murano. She was rushed to a hospital in Florida but sadly passed away two days later, CBS affiliate WBTV reports. The condition of the injured man is not yet clear.
Gaston County EMS in North Carolina, where Jolly worked, confirmed her death in a Facebook post. The agency described her as “more than a colleague — she was family” and praised her compassion and dedication. “Her loss is immeasurable and will be deeply felt across our organization and beyond,” they said.
Jolly had been with Gaston County EMS since 2021 and was part of the agency’s swift water rescue team. In 2023, she was recognized as the B-Shift Outstanding Paramedic.
The post from Gaston County EMS also thanked the community for their support and asked for thoughts and prayers for Jolly, her loved ones, and her EMS family.
Deputy County Manager Vincent Wong also shared his condolences, calling Jolly’s death “heartbreaking” and highlighting her dedication, courage, and commitment to helping others.
The fatal crash is still under investigation, according to WESH.
