What began as a highly publicized White House press event about lowering the cost of weight-loss drugs turned into a scene of confusion and alarm — with President Donald Trump leaping from his chair as a pharmaceutical executive suddenly collapsed.
Witnesses say the shocking incident unfolded just minutes into Thursday’s Oval Office press conference, where Trump was touting a deal between the administration and Eli Lilly to make drugs like Zepbound and Wegovy more affordable for Americans battling obesity.
Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks was mid-speech when Gordon Findlay, an executive with rival firm Novo Nordisk, appeared to lose consciousness, sending the room into chaos.
Video released by the White House shows Ricks freezing mid-sentence as Findlay began to sway. Within seconds, Dr. Mehmet Oz — Trump’s handpicked head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — bolted toward the executive, catching him before he struck the floor.
Trump, visibly startled, jumped from his chair and looked on as aides rushed to assist. “It all happened so fast — one second we were talking about price caps, and the next, people were yelling for a medic,” said one White House correspondent who witnessed the event.
Secret Service agents quickly ushered reporters from the room as staff called in the White House Medical Unit.
‘The Gentleman Is Okay,’ White House Confirms
Minutes later, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt briefed reporters in the adjacent press room. “During the Most Favored Nations Oval Office announcement, a representative fainted,” she said. “The White House Medical Unit quickly jumped into action, and the gentleman is okay.”
Sources confirm Findlay was treated on-site and later left the building under his own power. “He got a little lightheaded — but he’s fine,” Trump later told reporters when they were allowed back inside. “We had a little interruption, but everyone handled it beautifully.”
A Strange Pattern Inside Trump’s Oval Office
Thursday’s emergency wasn’t the first time someone fainted during a Trump-led health event. Back in April, Dr. Oz’s 11-year-old granddaughter, Philomena, briefly lost consciousness during a ceremonial swearing-in conducted by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
That moment, too, prompted questions about the high-pressure atmosphere surrounding Trump’s televised Oval Office events, which often blur the line between policy briefings and campaign-style media spectacles.
Behind the Weight-Loss Drug Push
Thursday’s event was meant to highlight Trump’s latest “America Slims Down” initiative — an effort to cap the prices of popular weight-loss medications that have surged in demand nationwide. The plan, developed with input from Dr. Oz and major drugmakers, aims to make treatments like Eli Lilly’s Zepbound and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy more accessible to middle-class Americans.
“The president wants Americans to live longer, healthier, and — as he put it — ‘leaner lives,’” Ricks said before the collapse interrupted his remarks.
The agreement would allow Medicare to negotiate bulk purchasing of the drugs, a move that Democrats have long pushed for but that Trump has now embraced in a surprising bipartisan shift.
“I’ll give credit where it’s due,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), responding to the news Thursday evening. “If this helps Americans afford life-changing medication, that’s something we can all support — though the White House might want to keep a doctor nearby next time.”
As for Findlay, he’s reportedly recovering and in “good spirits.” But the unsettling moment served as a reminder that even in the tightly choreographed Trump presidency, nothing ever goes quite according to script.
