It was supposed to be a glittering pre-pageant event in Bangkok. Instead, it spiraled into a public relations nightmare for Miss Universe after a heated confrontation between a Thai pageant organizer and Miss Mexico was caught live on Facebook.
Witnesses say the tension began when Nawat Itsaragrisil, head of Thailand’s Miss Grand International organization, accused Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, of refusing to take part in a promotional photoshoot meant to showcase the host country.
“You are in Thailand. You are in a game. Be careful,” Itsaragrisil said into the microphone, addressing Bosch directly as dozens of contestants sat in silence.
When Bosch stood to defend herself, the exchange grew even more volatile. “That’s not true,” she insisted, explaining that she had not refused any event. But the organizer interrupted her mid-sentence, demanding she confirm she would post promotional content for Thailand on social media.
When another contestant tried to intervene, Itsaragrisil snapped that he was only speaking to Miss Mexico because he had “received a report” about her. Then, in a moment that stunned viewers watching live, he called Bosch a “dummy,” implying she was merely following orders from her national director.
Visibly shaken but defiant, Bosch shot back: “Because I have a voice. You are not respecting me as a woman.” Moments later, Itsaragrisil signaled for security to escort her out.
As Bosch turned to leave, she told him, “As women, you need to show respect for us. I’m here representing a country, and it’s not my fault that you have problems with my organization.”
Her words triggered an extraordinary show of solidarity. Several contestants stood up and followed her out of the room, while others remained frozen in disbelief. “If anyone wants to continue in the contest, sit down!” Itsaragrisil barked through the microphone, as the atmosphere grew chaotic.
The incident, streamed live on Miss Universe Thailand’s official Facebook page, quickly went viral. Clips spread across TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), sparking outrage among pageant fans who accused the organizer of public humiliation and “unprofessional behavior.”
Neither Bosch nor the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) immediately commented. However, by late Tuesday evening, the MUO released an official statement on Instagram pledging to “uphold the highest standards of respect, safety, and integrity for all participants.”
The organization confirmed that its CEO, Mario Búcaro, was traveling to Thailand to “strengthen collaboration with local partners” and ensure a “secure and professional environment for all delegates.”
“The Miss Universe Organization remains steadfast in its mission to promote collaboration, respect, and opportunity for women around the world,” the statement read, adding that all scheduled events would proceed “in full cooperation” with Thai partners.
But social media users weren’t convinced. Under the MUO’s post, thousands of comments poured in, many demanding a formal apology to Miss Mexico. “This isn’t empowerment. It’s intimidation,” one user wrote. Another added, “The contestants showed more grace than the organizers.”
The Miss Universe finals are set to take place later this month in Bangkok — but after this controversy, the world’s attention is already fixed on how the organization will repair its image before the crowning moment.
