Michelle Obama has never been one to shy away from bipartisanship — but even her most loyal fans are still fascinated by her famously warm rapport with none other than George W. Bush.
During a lighthearted appearance Tuesday on Today with Jenna & Friends, the 61-year-old former First Lady sat down with co-host Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of the 43rd President, to promote her latest book The Look — but it didn’t take long for the conversation to veer into viral territory.
“Is your dad behaving himself these days?” Obama asked with a knowing grin, sending the studio into laughter.
“He’s not!” Jenna admitted. “Not at all. But he misses you.”
Obama, who’s been photographed sharing hugs and laughs with Bush at numerous public events over the years, smiled and shot back: “Good. I’d be worried if he was.”
Their friendship — often cited as a model of post-partisan civility — has only grown more symbolic since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January.
“People are starving for unity right now,” said political analyst Dr. Kyla Rodriguez, speaking to MSNBC after the segment aired. “The Michelle-George friendship is weirdly comforting. Especially in this climate.”
Back in 2016, a photo of Obama embracing Bush at the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture went viral — sparking memes, praise, and political speculation. On Tuesday’s show, that photo resurfaced onscreen, prompting another round of jokes.
“Doesn’t it look like you’re about to read him a bedtime story?” Jenna teased.
Obama replied with mock sincerity: “That’s how he makes me feel. Like I want to tuck him in.”
Jenna, now a veteran morning host, kept the banter going, calling her father a “meme maker” — despite him not knowing what a meme even is.
“Oh, absolutely,” Michelle agreed. “Even behind the scenes. He’s a living, breathing meme.”
Obama also took a moment to give former First Lady Laura Bush a birthday shoutout, adding, “To Laura — happy birthday, you are a rockstar. You ran a country — because we all know, the women do it.”
Jenna, visibly moved, responded, “And raised two wild twins. I don’t know how she did it.”
Though Obama’s warmth toward the Bush family has drawn mixed reactions over the years, her message during Tuesday’s segment was clear: relationships don’t have to be defined by party lines.
“She knows exactly what she’s doing,” said author and former White House adviser Lila Bennett. “It’s a masterclass in grace and power. She’s showing that even in Trump’s America, kindness can still be political — without compromising your values.”
The segment ended with one more nugget — Jenna recalling a recent run-in with Barack Obama at an event.
“My dad literally shouted across the room, ‘How’s my girlfriend?’” she laughed. “He was talking about you. He just lights up when you’re around.”
Michelle, chuckling, looked straight into the camera: “Tell him I miss him too. But again — only if he’s not behaving.”
