Kid Rock’s ‘Dehumanizing’ Slur on Fox News Sparks National Outrage

Kid Rock is no stranger to controversy, but his latest stunt—aired live on Fox News—has ignited a new firestorm, drawing fierce backlash from disability advocates and Democratic leaders alike.

During an appearance on Jesse Watters Primetime, the Trump-aligned rocker donned a surgical mask and joked that his Halloween costume was a “r—–.” The offensive slur, once commonly used to demean people with intellectual disabilities, was broadcast to millions. Watters, instead of challenging the remark, laughed along and quipped, “I guess you can be anything for Halloween.”

But not everyone was laughing.

Loretta Claiborne, Chief Inspiration Officer of Special Olympics and a longtime civil rights advocate, didn’t mince words. In an open letter addressed directly to Kid Rock, she called the moment “deeply dehumanizing.”

“You have a powerful voice and a massive platform,” Claiborne wrote. “When you use that word, you reopen wounds that so many of us have worked so hard to heal. It wasn’t a joke. It was an act of humiliation.”

Claiborne urged the 54-year-old singer—whose real name is Robert James Ritchie—to publicly apologize and use his platform to stand against hate.

So far, he hasn’t responded.

If the slur wasn’t enough, Rock went even further during the segment, launching into a bizarre tirade blaming “liberal women” for America’s declining birthrate.

“Who’s gonna sleep with these ugly a–, broke, crazy, deranged, TDS liberal women?” Rock sneered, invoking the right-wing phrase “Trump Derangement Syndrome” to describe women who oppose the current president.

It’s not the first time Rock has used his platform to insult women, Democrats, or marginalized communities—but this time, critics say, he may have gone too far.

Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth, a veteran and longtime disability rights advocate, condemned the comments in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“There is no excuse for this kind of language. Kid Rock owes every person with an intellectual disability—and every American watching that night—a sincere apology. And so does Fox News.”

Progressive groups, including Disability Rights Advocates and the National Down Syndrome Society, have called on Fox News to issue a public statement and ban Rock from future appearances.

So far, neither Fox nor Jesse Watters has commented.

Kid Rock has made himself a mascot for the far-right culture wars—mocking masks, praising Trump, and bashing progressive movements at every turn. His relationship with President Trump goes back years. In fact, Rock has frequently appeared at campaign events and even golfed with the president last summer at Mar-a-Lago.

But critics say Rock’s comments reflect something deeper: the normalization of cruelty under Trump’s leadership.

“What we’re seeing is not just one celebrity making a disgusting joke,” said Dr. Maya Wilson, professor of media ethics at NYU. “It’s a reflection of the larger cultural permission granted by this administration to mock, belittle, and demean.”

As of this writing, neither Kid Rock nor Jesse Watters has offered a retraction or apology. But pressure is mounting—and so are calls for advertisers to pull their sponsorships from Fox News.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans with intellectual disabilities—and their families—wait to see if one of the nation’s loudest bullies will be held accountable.

“This isn’t about politics,” Claiborne said. “It’s about humanity.”
